Unstable VPN

Postby HPDK8900 » Dec 16 06 1:35 am

I have installed a wingate server on a win2000. when connecting I can open most of the machines in the remote network (host end) but not the server (the PC running wingate).
Once in a while when I connect, I get through to the server, then I am requested to log on to it, and can see it´s shares. But then suddenly the server becomes inaccesable, and I can't connect to it again.
I've also experienced, that the VPN connection won't connect.
There's no pattern og and logical reason for this as I see it.

any good ideas ?

Here are a few suggestions and I need to acknowledge it is challenging when you say it sometimes works.

The latest version of WinGate is 6.2.0.
The latest version of WinGate VPN Only is 2.2.0

1. On Windows XP SP2 Computers, the Windows Firewall is best disabled in the Windows Services for the sake of testing if you deem it safe; not the Windows Control panel. On Win98 SE you would want to disable ICS as well if not needed.

2. Try using proven network connectivity methods when testing.
i.e. don't use NetBIOS names for testing, use IP Addresses. If you get good connectivity with IP Addresses then you need to review your NetBIOS setup.

For Example:
VPN Host at work = 192.168.50.1
VPN Participants at work = 192.168.50.2 - 192.168.50.254
VPN Joiner at home = 10.1.1.2

To test connectivity to the VPN Host from home:
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> Ping 192.168.50.1

To test share connectivity with UNC paths and ip addresses to VPN Host from home:
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> \\192.168.50.1

3. Disable any security suites on the WinGate Server for the sake of testing if you deem it safe or alternatively look at any security suites’ logs and alerts and see if you can see your home computer name / ip address getting blocked; if it is getting blocked then you need to make an exception to that feature in your security suite.

4. If you do not need RRAS, try disabling it for the sake of testing.

5. Look for any extra information in the Windows Event viewer.

If you are still having problems please create a support ticket and send in the following details from the WinGate Server; also reference this forum post:

(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig/all > C:\ipa.txt
GateKeeper --> Tools menu --> Advanced --> Save Report
GateKeeper --> Tools menu --> Advanced --> Save Registry
The Windows error message when trying to access the files within the share.

I have installed VPNOnly2.1.0.1068, so I will try installing the newer version.

AD Q1.
All firewalls has been diabled, windows, norton and wingates own.
The server is running windows 2000, clients windows XP and win 2K.

ADQ2
I have tried to Ping the server.
I can ping clients machines behind the server, but not the server.

ADQ3
I only have Wingate VPN installed, and I have disabled its firewall.

ADQ4
I haven't enabled RRAS on the win2000 server, will try and see if it is enabled as defalut.

ADQ5
I'll do so, and report back here.

I forgot to mention.

The server is always listed as not accessable in wingate

When not able to connect I get no error messages. When I doubleclick
on the server in wingate nothing happens.

When i am able to connect, I am not granted acces to the shared resources.

And then again, suddenly I am granted acces, but only for a short while,
then there's no response again.

Have never been able to ping the server ever.

The fileserver wich is running wingate is not running windows 2000 server, but simply a normal windows 2K.

Both the client and server has been placed in the routers DMZ
I disabled the Wingate Dhcp server.

As I log on from the client, I can ping, and open the server for approx
10 seconds before I loose contact. Then i can't ping between the server and client.
But I can ping and open files from the client to other machines behind the server.
When I try to open a browser on the server from the clien, nothing happens.

Tried all your surgestions, with no effect.

I'll make a support ticket, as I get the files you requested.

Yes, make that support ticket with the requested attachments and reference this forum post; this is an intriguing issue.
