Wingate VPN with MAC as clients?

Postby Undertaker2 » Jan 05 04 9:20 am

My computer is running a VPN server on Windows2003 standard edition and is directly connected to the internet. Three people dial in into my PC and establish a VPN connection (I can nicely see that three connections are established) On the same computer I create a Warcraft 3 LAN game (which uses UDP broadcast to announce itself on the network)

At this point problems arise: Microsoft VPN doesn't forward the UDP broadcast packets, so nobody 'sees' my game! If i'm correct, Wingate VPN can help me here, since it DOES handle broadcast UDP packets (right?)

There is only one small (or big - depending on the answer) 'but': The clients are all MAC's running the latest MAC OS!

Is it possible to let them connect to Wingate VPN?

Hmmm. Well, Warcraft 3 was part of the reason for that feature, and yes, WinGate VPN does relay UDP broadcast packets.

Unfortunately, we don't have a version for MAC OS available currently. I'm going to throw a few ideas out there though, maybe somebody who knows MACs better can make a few other suggestions.

1. The more expensive solution would be to put a small, cheap Windows PC down that connects to your primary server. Then point the MAC to connect out through that. Obviously, not the best solution as there is a bit more cost outlay than for just a VPN Software solution.

2. Second option is to try it through an emulator ...

http://www.kearney.net/~mhoffman/VPC3/win2k_review/
etc.

The WinGate VPN is available in a trial version, it will give you 30 days to experiment around with different ones. I'm not sure if it will work though - don't have enough knowledge about MACs and emulators to say yeah or nay for sure.

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Okay, had a chat to the local MAC guru. His response below:

"I really think that isn't going to work. Virtual PC emulates a PC at a
hardware level, so it's still running some version of NDIS (depending
on the OS they are emulating), and the WinGate driver should work. On
the other hand, if Virtual PC accesses the network, it must do so via a
"fake" network driver that forwards the real data to the parental Mac
OS (similar to way VMWare does it on a PC). That driver will probably
be a bit non standard. I'd say: if he has VirtualPC, it's perfectly
safe to give it a go, but I wouldn't bet money on it working."

Still, seems like it might be worth a shot ?
