how can I tell if I have the latest signature files?

Postby xwray » Oct 24 05 11:07 am

I am a new user of Wingate and the KAV plugin.

In Gatekeeper, if I click on PLUGINS and then doubleclick on the Kapersky AV entry a message displays that tells me, amongst other things, that it was last updated 20 October. Right now I have the update scheduled for once per day. I get a system message from KAV that updating was successful and if I look an the files in the BASES subdirectory I see several files with the current date so it looks like new files were in fact downloaded. Why doesn't the plugins dialog indicate the current date or is that referring to something else other than virus signature files.

Also, the largest downloaded file was troj022.avc at 56K. File daily.avc, which I assume is the virus signature file, is only 12K. Is my antivirus actually being updated...I am used to signature files being much larger?

Also, there are several files with similar names in the BASES subdirectory (the numerical part of the name is different) with different dates...does KAV just keep downloading new files each day and won't that fill up the directory - I'm used to new signature files being downloaded which overwrite the current file. Could someone please explain to me how the KAV signature file update process works?

many thanks for any feedback

Hi,

Here is a snapshot of the KAV directory from a server which hasn't had any user intervention or 'purging' since January the 15th last.

KAV manages this well and seems to remove redundant files, yes the signatures are quite 'compact' and about 6mb in this example.

[quote="Nev"]Hi,

Here is a snapshot of the KAV directory from a server which hasn't had any user intervention or 'purging' since January the 15th last.

KAV manages this well and seems to remove redundant files, yes the signatures are quite 'compact' and about 6mb in this example.

Although I haven't any experience of other brand products to compare.

Hope this helps.

Yes, thanks, it does help...it lets me know that my installation is apparently working as designed.

Being a curious person, since KAV seems to work quite differently that what I am familiar with, if anyone could explain the update philosophy in more detail in terms of how all those files are used by KAV, I appreciate it - are all of the files being actively used or just the latest downloads, does KAV concatenate all or some of the files; ie, is KAV building a signature "database" from the files, etc.

thanks

Hi

I believe all files are used - basically they release incremental updates on a daily basis.
