Beating Puresight

Postby alyork » Jul 17 08 4:46 am

A number of my clients have reported that Puresight is easily beaten in some case.

It seems that if a site is flagged as blocked due to whatever, clicking the bowser reload/refesh several times often gets past Puresight and opens the blocked site anyway.

So I thought I'd test this and sure enough, I was able to open sites that were initially blocked after not too much fooling around.

What is going on here and how do I fix the problem?

Thanks - Al

I now assume, after two weeks since my post, and the total lack of replies that Puresight really is busted and there is no answer about how to fix it. Sigh.

I have actually found this to be true also.

Is there any information to help mitigate this problem?

Thanks,

Hi

Sorry for lack of response on this so far. We've had reports of this before, but I thought it was fixed. Do you have caching enabled in WinGate?

Caching is set to the default during the Wingate install at all my sites. I assume that its on as I haven't turned it of anywhere.

We have had caching turned off for many versions now. Google is the easiest to beat and will give up the goods minus picutres in most cases. I just did a keyword search on playboy and it gave up a list after three tries. Some of the links blocked but PureSight let me through to www.primebreasts.net without a complaint. It's a gallery of topless bunnies.

Hi

We;re going to be releasing a new version of PureSight soon using an updated PureSight SDK. I've also made some major mods to the structure of the WWW proxy. Combined I believe this means this problem will go away, as the interaction between scanning and caching is now much more deterministic, and the cache won't have access to anything blocked by a scanning plugin (which it shouldn't have before, except possibly in some error conditions).

Hi

Would anyone seeing this problem like to test a WinGate 6.5.3 which we believe should fix it?

let me know and I'll send you a download link

Cheers

Hi,

have a small problem with filtering in PureSight 8 which seems to be similar to what Rob described.
We have just installed Wingate 8 and PureSight 8 in a setup with a number of PC's and all working technically and generally fine.
We are have enabled blocking using a number of categories in PureSight and this works "99%" ok.

We are doing some testing before we let this setup become accessible for users.
Among other we want to completely block any access to explicit sexually-related material.
The appropriate category in PureSight is enabled and is generally working fine, however:

Links going to for example Google images within this category is not entirely blocked by WinGate / Puresight.
We got pages of explicit sexually-related photos (very bad porn photos...) via Google images.

These images might not have any text "wrapped around them" (in lack of a better description), tags or metadata indicating this content...

How can this be resolved?
