Puresight vs wingate

Postby bench » Oct 01 05 10:02 am

OK, I have been using wingate for over 6 months now. I never really payed attention to the other products offered by qbik until now while looking at the antivirus plugin.

So my question is what is the difference between the two? There seems to be little difference in price so why would I want to get puresight instead of wingate?

PureSight - that Qbik offers - is a complimentary product for use with WG - it is not a standalone product. While it can create white and black lists much like WG it goes a step beyond and attempts to analyse a site's content, and based on the parameters you give for acceptability, will allow or not allow the site for viewing by your users. WG can use this product for additional filtering if traffic is run through the proxy services. Also WG can use the Kaspersky product much the same way only for virus checking internet traffic. Check this link if you haven't already!

Thats not "complimentary" as in free.

That's "complimentary" as in works with.

Ah yes wrong word. S/B complementary as

Now it wouldn't it be nice if it was complimentary.

overkill

Well, I thought wingate was supposed to do just that with the service and system policies. You can use the ban list or create filters to block websites but I guess qbik didn't want us to have complete control over it with one product so they limit wingate and try and sell you another product.

The client I installed wingate for gave me a specific list of sites employees can access and it works well in the service policies. I don't see why I would need puresight.

In reality, zyxel makes a really good router with a firewall that has content filtering for concerned parents and it's much easier to setup and use.

I think qbik should discontinue puresight and include all web content control with wingate.

In the scenario you presented IMHO you wouldn't. But what if the client said to you "I don't want any users to access porn sites" You would have to come up with a rather large list of sites to enter into WG policies. Norton's internet security programs do this. They have a huge database of sites to check against and it is constantly being updated - something you would have to do to keep the client happy. PureSight, a product that Qbik does not develop, took a different approach and through some clever "magic" are able to do a pretty good job determining if a site has porn in it or not. I'll be the first to admit it is not perfect, but nothing in life seldom is. Maybe I'm wrong here and Qbik staff can correct me, but I surmise that Qbik wanted to offer to it's customers something beyond the scope of what they were developing and they felt PureSight fit the bill. Thus Qbik developed an interface to WG so the Puresight plug in could add the additional filtering parameters.

WG is great but not that great! I think what you are saying here is akin to: Why doesn't MS include WordPerfect with their OSes instead of Wordpad? I think it would be fantastic if Qbik could develop their own content filtering product (to Qbik - Can You? Do you want to?) and offer it with WG at the same price they do now.

Just my thoughts. Ah, but yes, one man's logic is another man's nightmare!
