wingate 6 RC2 wont cache anything

Postby saubrey » Jul 25 04 4:02 pm

I upgraded from 5.2.3 to RC2. RC2 doesn't cache any files although I didn't change anything when I upgraded to RC2 and 5.2.3 cached files correctly.

Here's a little more info. Every once in a while I see a file is added to the cache sub-dir, but then it is deleted almost immediately.

More info. After three days of running RC2, my cache sub-dir has only three files in it and one of them is cache.idx. With 5.2.3 I normally would have thousands of files in three days. Any ideas what I need to do to get RC2 to correctly cache? As I said, I installed RC2 over 5.2.3 and 5.2.3 correctly cached. After upgrading to RC2 and noticing that it wasn't caching anything, I used Gatekeeper to Purge the cache, but still it won't cache. Should I delete all my current cache filters and purge filters and then re-enter them?

Hi

I'll have another check on that. It shouldn't have changed, although we did update our processing of some of the newer HTTP/1.1 cache control tags.

If files get in there then are immediately purged, do you see any activity to that effect in the system activity screen in GateKeeper? I wonder if somehow it thinks it has a very small allowable cache size.

I did not notice any Activity Pane activity, but I wasn't looking for it either. With 5.2.3 I had a 40 meg cache size and I had specified 7 or 8 rules for what to cache, and also 5 or so rules for what to purge. And this is what I had immediately after upgrading. When I noticed that nothing was being added to the cache I then removed all the cache rule and specified "Cache everything" and I also removed all the purge rules. And then restarted Wingate, but still nothing is cached. I then even tried setting IE back to not use http 1.1, but that didn't help either.

Hi

When you are say downloading a big file, does it show up in the cache directory whilst it is being downloaded (it should), and then disappear once it is finished?

Yes, exactly. When downloading a 7 MB pdf, a 56K file shows up in the cache sub-dir, and stays 56K for the entire lenght of the download...in my case about 3 minutes. But then when the 7 MB pdf is finished downloading the 56K file is removed from the cache sub-dir

Haven't seen any movement in my cache since migrating to V6, 19th of May.

Cache.idx is showing current date / time so is refreshed.

We found a problem in the caching subsystem. It is related to HTTP 1.1 processing, but we're busy reviewing it at the moment. We're expecting a maintenance release (With minor tweaks) relatively soon.

2. Fixed a problem with Web caching on sessions with multiple HTTP 1.1 requests

It seems that the caching problem is still open in 993/995. On my system nothing will be cached. All files are only there as long as the transfer is ongoing...

In support to olaf.krause,
On my Windows server 2003 the same holds: No files cached, though the index is updated as service startup.
My Internet Explorer WRP problem was solved by the transition from 984 to 993, But my POP retrievel in Outlook 2000 from my service provider is blocked in the logon sequence as soon as I Switch from NAT to WGIC, so for now I switched back to NAT.
Also my Server freezes every once in a while during internet activity.

OK, how are your client browsers configured?

are they configured to use proxy? In which case, are they set to use HTTP/1.1 through the proxy, or no?

OK, we found the problem.

It is related to plugins. If any plugin is attached to the WWW Proxy, that breaks caching.

Anyway, we have a fix for it. How urgently do you want this? We can build you a custom engine if you like, otherwise it will be in the next maintenance release.

A beta version for testing would be fine. And it would guarantee that it will work in the next maintenance release. Just send it to my private e-mailbox.

I wouldn't mind having a beta version that fixes caching. I do not urgently need it, but as I have slow dsl, anything that improves performance is appreciated. Thanks, Steve

I would like to add that in version 6.0.2 build 1000 caching with KAV running is restored also (not mentioned in the hanges).
