Previous version licences in Ver 6.

I have a client who has trialled WG 6 and now that trial has ended they put in licence from previous version to activate Ver 6 (realising with reduced capabilities) and activation took place without a hitch, but now their client machines cannot connect out.

Client machines ping out and Names are resolved to IP so I'm pretty sure that DNS is working OK, just no connection or activity is showing.

It was working before trial was up so something changed when old license was used.

They are on dial up. WG server XP SP1. Clients machines mix of XP and 98, browsers - Netscape and IE. Using Ver 3 license.

How do the clients connect out? Were they using ENS? (During the trial period). If so, that is a post version 3 feature.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes they were using ENS (NAT). I wondered if that was the case, so I used proxy settings for IE and still no connection. Any further thoughts. I will point out that Ver 5.23 seems to work OK with Ver 3 license (that is what I reinstalled for them). Any more thoughts? Thanks.

Not just yet. Is it possible for you to send me / Matt Parker the details of their license via email? (A license ID should suffice)

Then we can run their license on a 6.0.3 setup here, see what happens. That way, you won't be trying things and reverting as I think them up, but we can try it on this side with the same license and tell you exactly what is wrong.

(There might be a bit of a turnaround on this, though, probably about 18 hours or so... is that ok?)

Okay. Sad news is, it worked perfectly. I activated the version 3 license (Deactivated it again as well) and could connect using a direct proxy connection. (Tried www.google.ca and a few other random searched sites)

Which, to me indicates that the license + WinGate is fine, but that it must be something more particularly setup related. I assume that it was an upgrade from their earlier version 3 installation?

Is there anything that might distinguish their configuration / setup? (It is the latest 6.0.3, correct?)

Hmmm. I hate when that happens! Nothing out of the ordinary. Basically a plain vanilla out of the box setup, new though - wasn't an upgrade from Ver. 3. Trialled WG ver 6.0.3 and everything was OK - put in old license and not OK. As mentioned earlier they were using NAT in trial......

I was hoping that wouldn't be the case, because ours was new as well. I think the best thing to do would be to get the logs, that will give us the clearest indication of where it is failing...

Two most obvious places would be to enable full debug for DNS and for WWW Proxy Service; that way we'll be able to see where they could potentially get stuck.

Packet captures of the traffic from the client to the server. That might give the clearest indiciation of where / why it is failing (If possible).

I've just had a scan through the licensing code and can't see any features that are disabled by certain version keys that would affect you. (Mostly things like email server, DMZ support, etc.)

However, I was wondering if there isn't some form of interaction with the dialer. I assume the connections are being established automatically, etc. as you indicated that you could resolve DNS, etc.

Connection to ISP is established from client machine, through, I assume a DNS request. Ping from client machine would resolve DNS at this point. But I believe the DNS log file showed that bounce? took place when trying to use browser. Unfortunately I had to reinstall 5.2.3 to get them back up and running, and that log file has been overwritten. When I get time again, I will try a Ver 6.0.3 reinstall and get a log file to you for analysis.
