Postby najam » Nov 30 04 10:20 pm

Dear Friends,
Need ur help
I am running departmental ISP (Non Commerial) having Wingate as Net Proxy Server and Symantic Antivirus MacAfee on Win2000 Server. My valueable clients r facing a problem that they can't have Voice Chat on either of the Messenagers (MSN, Yahoo etc) or Video (webcam) and SMS service running through their PCs.

Client are connected on LAN (UTP/Switches) and ADSL through DSLAM Having 2MB bandwidth thru DRS. Its a educational Institution having over 2000 students. Users are assumed and authentication is required. all ports are made open for TCP and UDP.

ON Messenagers (MSN, Yahoo etc)
For Voice / Vedeo / WebCam error messages are;-
The network or computer you are trying to reach is experiencing a problem. Please try again
You are behind the fire wall, contact your ISP or NetWork Administrator

ON SMS (Mobilink) one of the CELL services

Dear User, If you are behind a firewall or within a company local area network (LAN), you will need to open outgoing TCP connections to Port 51215 on your proxy server.

Other SMS Services (Ufone, Insta or Paktel) CELL Phone service s

It simply gets "DISCONNECTED" that is say not connect at all.

Voice over IP (VoIP) (NETTOPHONE, NET2PHONE etc etc)

It simply do't gets "CONNECTED"

It is added that all ports are openned and such firewall restriction is employed through antivirus. Its worth mentioning here that once wingate is reinstalled due to some reasons (for Hit & Trial) it do give the voice serice for a limited time but then taye taye fish

HELP IS REQUESTED, SOME BODY TO HELP / GUIDE ME TO RE-SOLVE THE ISSUE.

THANX IN ADVANCE

How do your clients connect out through WinGate - are you using Proxy, WGIC or NAT?

NAT is when you have no applications specifically configured on the client, but have set the default gateway and DNS server to the WinGate machine. This uses network address translation.

Proxy is when you configure the browser to proxy through the WinGate Server. The WinGate server makes the connections / communicates on behalf of the client.

Which one of the two are you using? Or do you have your browsers set to use proxy, but other applications are using NAT?

And do you have the antivirus firewall set to allow the appropriate ports?

Is that possible? As Neil says, from the sound of it it works for a while, then stops functioning. You do have a few different products installed which could be conflicting with eachother. Elliminating possible conflicts might be the easiest way to resolve this.

What provides the antivirus / firewall functionality then? The amount of time it takes before you are unable to use these applications - is it relatively consistent? From the sound of it the firewall is preventing the connections. You've indicated you have an antivirus product providing the firewall funcitonality and that you've opened all the ports on WinGate. This would suggest that the antivirus product is somehow timing out it's hash entries switching to blocking the traffic. But, with the large number of users you have actively (?) going through I wouldn't expect a timeout to be the cause of the problem.

Secondly, there has been significant driver improvements since 5.2.3. As you have a second machine setup; it might pay to try 6.0.3 with a trial license. 6.0.3 is generally a lot better behaved with messenger applications than 5.2.3 is. Also; it features dynamic binding which could play a role (Depending on configuration, etc.)
