A VPN connection cannot be established to a local IP

Postby eckstrom » Apr 08 05 2:11 am

no matter what I've tried, I always get the same message:
"A VPN connection cannot be established to a local IP"

I install Wingate to the server & client - generate the VPN config file - import it on the client ... I can't find complete installation documentation anywhere - yes, I've read the "VPN Setup Guide" ...

the server has 3 NICs - external to ISP, internal to local LAN, internal to local wireless ... VPN config is set to external NIC IP ... both server & client show both (Host) and (Join) in GateKeeper ...

any detailed install and startup instructions that address the problem would be most appreciated ...

You get that message when you attempt to connect to a local IP. In other words, one which exists on your local machine. In those instances, a VPN connection is redundant.

What you want to do is install the software on the machine that will be designated as the VPN server - this is on one network. Then, configure a VPN to Host and export it's config. When it prompts your for a DNS / IP enter the external IP of that server / network.

Then, install the software on a different network on the machine that will be the VPN gateway for that network. Import the config you had previously exported and enter the username and password that you want to use to establish the VPN connection.

That should be all that is required, beyond the trouble shooting steps if you have further problems that are described in the VPN setup guide.

my problem was that when I started GateKeeper on my Client I used my Server's IP, Username & Password - not the Local machine, my Client ...

thanks ...

Just to get my head around that - does that mean that you have the same VPN defined as a joiner and a hoster on your Server?
