wingate 6.0 issues...

Postby max3do » Jul 08 05 2:18 pm

Hello people..
My name Is erfan.
And sorry for my bad English.I am using wingate since ver 3. A great product. Wingate always provided me what I needed. and ver 6, Is my long awaited ver. Bandwidth control is a one amazing feature I can’t find anywhere else.
But wingate always come with some issues. I understand that it is not possible to deal with all with these issues, there is no software in this world that comes bug free.
But I thought that it’s better to tell what are the issues. So my hardworking qbik team can remove these issues.

First of all let’s start from the very beginning.
Installation is fine. But sometime it happed with windows XP sp 2 that wingate installiation give messeg that turn off your firewall, that’s already been turned off.

OK now come to the gatekeeper.
Sometimes it happed that after giving user and pass nothing is displayed..
No activity in the control panel. Just gray. But after pressing the go offline and tne go online button slove the problem.. (this problem is ignore able)

Ok now after the installation. Not every body need’s the log of each and every service.
By default the log of every service is enabled. Users don’t need the log of DHCP, Remote service, GDP, and others services also. If they need they can enable it for themselves. I think the log should be turned off by default for unnecessary every service. (Ignore able also)

Ok now I had found some issues in DHCP Service.
If you make a scope for 10.0.2.1 to 10.0.2.255 for the subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. and if you make another scope for 10.0.3.1 to 10.0.3.255 for the subnet mask of 255.255.0.0. wingate will simply let me do that. But this should conflict with each other.. but without any warring wingate will let me do that. I can also reserve the clients. I did’t know that my scope is conflicting. I started leasing the address. Soon I found that some clients are not having there address. usually on win98. so then I tried the same thing on windows 2003 DHCP server. It gave me a message that you can’t do this. (not ignore able)

And one more problem with DHCP Reservation. At the mac address area.
If you give a mac with Dash space, like this 00-00-00-00-00-00. wingate will not assign the address to the client. You needs to remove the dash, like this 000000000000. But Throughout the whole Policy wingate use the Dash space.. Like if you remove the dash in www policy where use must meet the mac address. wigate will not authorize the client. I think wingate should use the same Pattern. User will get confuse. Not every body that experimental like I am.

One more issue with activity screen. New in wingat 6.
If you right click on the screen and click View as Services. Http server will not Update. It will just stuck like this

www proxy servive :
http://
http://
http://
http://
http://

it will not show the whole URL. (now that’s ignorable)
--------------------------------------------------

Now comes to the main issue.
Which is located in the bandwidth management.
Like I have 200 clients.
And I want that each and every client will have 64k of speed.
I have to make separate restrictions and separate rules for each 200 clients.
That is very painful. There should be a wizard like thing to do such a task.
And if I want that all other request have 64k of speed and only port 80 will have 200 k of speed.. and that is double painful.
For the Whole 3 days and night of testing I was able to do that with wingate.
And that is very painful very very painful.
U have to make separate rule and separate restrictions for NAT and port 80 also.
And and and
One more issue with wingate.
Like if ur making rules. The list will not update.
U have to start and stop the wingate.
Gatekeep will update the registry but will not show in the gui environment.
That’s one problem too.
And one more last issue.
If you make changes in rule list. Like u want some rules to come after some .
U switch them up and down. You press OK .. and again checks to weather your rules are in place or not.. and you found that rules are still at their places..
It’s does’t matter where u put the rule in the list. Wingate will decide the rule order.
Weather u check it or not.

Well enough of the issues. Hope u ppl will solve this..
And I want a feature in the next release of wingate.
That I want to redirect the specifics file extension to be redirected to another proxyserver
Like I want .mp3 .exe .mpg to be redirected to another location.
And how about to limit that files too..
That .mp3 will have 64k of speed while .exe will have 33k of speed.

Bye. Hope you people will not mind.

Hi Erfan,

We really appreciate the time you took to write this, and your suggestions/reports. Hopefully I will have time to give you some feedback tomorrow (or another team member if they see this).

I did a quick test on the DHCP MAC address issue, seems like a bug (on a test machine which later I discovered was version 6.0.0 anyway, will have to confirm for 6.0.4 when we give you more feedback)
