URGENT: limited connectivity through wingate

Postby corcoran » Jul 15 05 9:55 pm

guys.

i've installed the 30-day trial of wingate 6.04 on a windows 2000 PC, with two nics; which are both showing as internal and external correctly in the network box.

i've got a huge problem in that i don't have any connectivity outside of the wingate server -- TO a point -- if i set up a route on my PC to a public IP address i can both ping and tracert -d to it. but i can't do any pop3 proxying or internet access. i've gone through as a comparison to my other 6.04 installation and point for point i swear it's the same.

i just can't see why it's not working!! argh!!

ENS is up and active, everything is how it should be.

the other issue that i've noticed on both my 604/win2k and 604/w2003 servers is that in the 'activity' sections, they're picking up wrong PC names against the IPs and activities. on this 604/win2k install, currently only I am accessing/testing the machine, but it's picking up a completely different PC name.

i've noticed that on my win2k PC, in port security, it's showing up all the 'redirects' of the various services and intercepting them -- however, on my win2003 box, i don't have these, just manually created ports and policies.

i could really do with sorting this out ASAP as our current ISP/ADSL provider is down...

for interest sake, disable the external nic (from start -> settings -> network & dialup) and then re enable. I've run into some multi homed issues with Win2K that sound simular to that... It may work... I've never found a resolution to this, I just schedule a job to bounce that interface once an hour.

Do you have you external IP assigned to the machine through DHCP?

What about public / private. If your external NIC has a private IP, or you are running public IPs on your internal network, WinGate will assume the wrong adapter usage. Sometimes it is easy to mix up which adapter is connected to which network (or maybe that's just me).

Do you see any firewall hits?

i get this feeling that the wingate is firewalling everything on both sides of the wingate, even though i can ping and tracert to remote IPs on the web.. i just can't fix it *sigh*

Not really - if you don't see firewall hits when you do things it means that Wingate either does not receive the return traffic or allows it through and there is something else that blocks it...

Can you open you Remote Control Service (bind it on external interface) so I can try and connect to it with my Gatekeeper? I will need your IP address - you can just email it to me.

i've installed 5.23 to the same effect. i can ping IP addresses and DNS names out of the wingate, but when i try to web-browse i'm getting internal error 500's.

how about a new theory involving the PII-266 it's running on with a 120 gig HDD?

No, it should be fine. Can you try and telnet to any website port 80 and issue GET / HTTP/1.0 <enter><enter>? This will give you an idea on whether the problem is browser/setup related or just a connectivity issue.

Hi, Corcoran

There is one more thing to try: install 6.0.4 again, run Advanced Options app, switch to the "Protocol handling" page and untick all checkboxes that concern MSS/MTU - like, Analyze MSS, for example. Then click OK and reboot the machine.

sorry - from the top -- Start, Run, CMD.... uh huh.

telnet www.qbik.com ... then what sorry pardon?

:)) Sorry - I had to be more specific

When the telnet connection comes through (you have to run telnet from the command line like that: telnet www.qbik.com 80) the screen stays blank and you type:
GET / HTTP/1.0

(don't forget about two <enter>s after 1.0)

If it shows something on the screen then it means that the connection went through and the data was returned.

Mind you, I'd suggest you try this MSS thing first, reboot the machine and then use the browser to try any web page.

right tried the telnet thing on both my wingate boxes. my one that works came back with letters and stuff -- my one that doesn't work, the one in question - came back with just a blank screen and 'connection to host lost'.

sorry, it's early, i'm barely coherent.

Which version of WG do you have installed now? Let me know when you are online and I will connect to your machine and check the config.

right then!
unplugged both lan cables - swapped NIC card roles, re-ip'ed both cards accordingly, plugged it all back in... aaaaaand..

voila.

it works.

i had wingate set-up on this box before with the original configuration from last week on adsl working ok.. today i got 'that feeling' that it must be the ISA NE2000 Nic in the machine.. changed it over - works great.. thought to myself 'hmm, don't fancy 10mbps on the lan side, so i'll put in a new nic'. dropped in a new dlink card.. and here i am! on the web! works! nice!

words of warning kids - ISA/SDSL. doom.
