Upgrade License question and Gatekeeper issue

Postby mandm1200 » Aug 16 05 9:12 am

I was at a clients place a few days ago. They are running a NT 4.0 server. The external modem was bad. I replaced the external modem. I was able to move around in the Gatekeeper program; however, Wingate would not connect to the existing dial up account. Removed that acount and reset it up. The problem is that Gatekeeper now pegs the cpu usage. I am able to make a connection to the ISP using Dial UP Networking. If I let Wingate make the connection, it connects and disconnects as though it could not able to authenicate the connection.

The customer is running an older version of Wingate, I believe it was about ver 4.5. I was thinking of updating to ver 6. However, I am not sure how this will affect the license(s) of the product. It was installed several years ago and there is no information. Will upgrading reguire any inputting of a License Key, or will it pull the information it needs when the upgrade is done?

Would deleting the History.dbf and History.cdx help in correcting Gatekeeper from pegging the cpu usage?

Finally, is there any reason why the modem disconnects when Wingate makes the connection instead of doing locally on the PC? Or should I cross that bridge after getting the Gatekeeper issue resolved?

Mike

Hi Mike,

Firstly, you can find their License Details in GateKeeper by going to the license manager. Copy and paste the licensee and key fields so you have them for later use. When you upgrade (if you choose to do so) to version 6 you have the option of only upgrading the software or of upgrading the license as well. If you upgrade the software only you will have to activate the old license through the new license management system. This will allow you to use the latest version but won't give you access to any of the new features (Bandwidth control and so forth).

I'd recommend resolving the CPU useage problem firstly. That does indeed sound like a history reading problem. What you can do is stop the WinGate Engine Service and copy those history files to another folder before deleting them. That way you can recover them if necessary.

Have you configured the dialup account in WinGate? You need to enter the username and password to be used in the Dialer Profile in WinGate itself. It is possible that with the switch to the new modem that this has not been done. You can also turn on debug logging for the Dialer itself as that could potentially point you directly at the problem.
