Trying to set up trial - help!!

Oct 01 05 5:41 am

Trying to set up VPN Trial. 2 sites each with Broadband Router, keep getting 'connection to remote host timed out'. What does this indicate and what is solution. One end has DLink DI-624+, the other has DSL504T router.

What do I need to do?

It sounds as if the router does not allow traffic in on port 809 TCP / UDP.

If the router supports a virtual server/pinhole/port forward you need to push that traffic through to the WinGate server for Control (TCP) and Data (UDP) channels so they can succesfully communicate.

You'd need to look at the router documentation to see how to do that.

1. Check that the joiner is connecting to the correct IP Address. When you are sitting on te VPN Host (the side that does the authentiction), go to this website: http://www.whatismyip.com

2. That error caused also be caused by a firewall on your computer. Are you running any security apps? you may want to disable it when the joiner connects in for the sake of testing. You can do a quick test to check that there is something listening on port 809.

Get the VPN Joiner to open a command prompt and test via telnet whether the ports are opened correctly.

(windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> telnet -->
open vpn.myserver.com 809

If the Windows goes blank, or say "Press any key" then you have connectivity to that port.
If you get the error message: Connecting To vpn.myserver.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 809: Connect failed
... Then there most probably is a firewall blocking the port; Windows firewall? Check your services..

3. The link below has precise info for opening ports for WinGateVPN on common routers.

4.There is a guide to nstalling the VPN, and a troubleshooting section at this forum post: http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?p=16108#16108

But I still can't connect to my remote machine

My remote machine is now connected, but I can't see any of the shares on it. Any clues?

1. Is file sharing enabled and bound on it?
2. Did you forward the UDP port as well?
3. Can you ping it by internal IP?
