WinGate 5.2.3 guideline needed

Postby welley » Nov 18 05 4:54 pm

Hi all,

I am a beginner of using the WinGate. Below is the information about WinGate that i had used:

WinGate version : WinGate 5.2.3 (as a server)
OS : Windows Server 2003

I had face some problem when using WinGate may someone please give me some guideline of using WinGate.

1) i had failed to blocked for those messenger. The method that i used to block is go the SOCKS proxy server then add the ban list by ban the server name or IP address. Or go to the system policies there to set the ban list. But both also failed to block the messenger!

But i had successful to block it for once, after that the WinGate service is terminated! And unfutunately i forgot what had i done for the blocking! =(

2) When i try to block for the access of the messenger but it will automatically block the access for the www proxy service! I really need a detail guide for blocking the messenger and www proxy.

3) I had devided my user into 3 access level, but what happen is that when i set the ban list for one of the access group ( eg: block the access for low level access users but will also take effect on the high level access users!)

4) Some time will keep change the ban list (keep add or delete the ban list when is not give any respond) then later a while it will terminate the service. Cause the DHCp service and winsock redictor service are terminated and when i try to start it again will prompt out the error message of access denied! Then i login again, all the things in the service tab is gone! Can let me know what cause this happened?

5) Finally, can the port range simply be changed? Or need to be in some range? what is the use of all this port range?

I need it urgent!!!! So hope that you guys can give me some of the solution as soon as possible...if not i need to reinstall the winGate for many many times ='(

5.2.3 on Windows 2003? There have been a lot of changes since that version; get the latest one from here.

1. MSN Messenger.
a) Use Windows Policies
b) Use the WinGate Internet Client (WGIC) to deny the MSN Messenger.exe.
c) There are a few more ways too; have a search through the forum. e.g. http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?p=20295#20295

2. MSN Messenger.
a) See 1.

3. Where are you setting the policies? Policies can be done many ways, here is a suggestion:
a) Create your 3 groups. Add your users into the specific groups
b) Navigate to the WWW Proxy Service
c) In the General page, select your authentication method.
d) On the Policy Page, Set the Default Rights to "are ignored"
e) Click the Add Button
f) Select group called "Low" and set the radio button to "Users must be authenticated"
g) Go to the Advanced tab, Add Filter, Add Criterion
h) This Criterion is NOT met if HTTP URL Contains Hotmail
i) Add another website to block; Add Filter, Add Criterion
j) This Criterion is NOT met if HTTP URL Contains Yahoo
k) OK back to the WWW Proxy Service Properties.
l) Go back to e) and do the restrictions for the MED users
m) Go back to e) and set a policy for the HIGH users; if they have full access, then you will only need to specify an authentication method.

4. Not sure, try WinGate 6.1

5. Please detail your question better; but it sounds like you just need to Doubles Click the Service, and change the port number.

Thanks jamesc! I had able to restrict the access to internet according to the user access level.

But i have another query, my office here is using the outlook express, through the server. So some time it may happen is that a mail will be resent for so many times even i just click a sent button once! izzit because i use the command of "sent all email now" too many time then caaus the smtp server keep sent the mail to the same person? Or the is infected by virus? So far no virus found after i scan my pc.

Hi,

Did you upgrade to version 6.1? Are you running a trial license or are you using a purchased license?

Well, we made a lot of changes between version 5 and version 6, with some major upgrades to the mail server, so it would be much better if you upgrade to the latest version.
