Help Needed

Postby abcgraphix » Nov 01 05 8:12 am

I have wingate 6.0.4 installed on a server and I am trying to connect to gamespy and also to Battlefield 2.
I cannot access gamespy on the client computer, but it connects just fine when I try from the server where wingate is installed.
What should I do in order to have the client machines to access gamespy as well as battlefield 2?

Thanks a lot

Are you making a NAT connection? You will need NAT to connect out through WinGate.

You make a NAT connection by setting the default gateway and DNS server address on the client machine to point at the internal (LAN) adapter of the WinGate server. You must have two NICs in the WinGate server, and they should be marked as internal (for the LAN) and external (for the internet). You can check this on the Network tab in GateKeeper, double click an adapter if you need to change it, and select the appropriate setting from the dialogue box.

I have ENS enabled and NAT checked on the server (firewall disabled)
On the client I have the default gateway and the DNS pointing to the internal IP (server's IP), but I still can't connect to gamespy on the client machine (no problem connecting on the server)... also I can't even ping an outside address (yahoo.com for example) but a can browse online no problem on the client.
Someone please help me

When you ping the www.yahoo.com URL do you see it resolve to an IP address?

If it does not resolve to an IP address then there is a problem with your DNS settings. Please make sure that your adapters are marked correctly in WinGate and that there is a binding policy in the WinGate DNS service to bind to the internal adapter.

If the URL resolves to an IP address but you can't reach it then there is a problem connecting to/through WinGate. Are you able to ping the WinGate server. Are you able to ping the router through the server (WinGate's default gateway)?

Please make sure that the WinGate server's internal adapter does not have a default gateway listed, and unless you're running Active Directory the DNS server should also be left blank.

Let us know how you get on,

I can't resolve the name to an IP
on wingate the nics are marked correctly, but I can't start the DNS service (there is a exclamation mark in a red circle by it)
I can ping the server but cannot ping the router's ip through the server, but I can access the router via internet explorer
What am I doing wrong?

Hi

If you are getting a red exclamation mark on winGate's DNS server, that means it couldn't start up, which is 99.99999% a sign that there is another DNS server running on that machine. Is that machine running a server OS? e.g. 2k server or active directory server?

If the OS is running a DNS server, you don't need to have WinGate's one running, but the OS one needs to be able to resolve names on the Internet, which requires the OS DNS server to be configured with a forwarder - somewhere to forward requests to when it doesn't know the answer (which will be the case for all Internet name lookups).

Alternatively if you aren't actually using an Active Directory on your network, you could turn off the OS DNS server. If you are using Active Directory, you need to use the MS DNS server, so you would have to get it working for Internet name lookups.
