HELP: FTP access with Dreamveawer MX 2004

Postby itgmorigia » Feb 01 06 10:52 pm

We have Wingate installed as a cache only and authentication proxy server (only 1 nic) and we use a client with Dreamweaver MX 2004 to upload ftp web contents.
We do not use the wingate client and we setting the proxy dns name and port in advanced settings of the remote site configuration.
The wingate server do not authenticate trasparently the Dreamweaver machine and refuse connections.
We installed the wingate client but the result was the same and as a strange side effect after removing the wingate client the ftp access has function for a session only. After user disconnection and/or rebooting the machine the ftp connection cannot be made. Now we cannot reproduce this side effect neither.
The wingate server has the FTP service on port 21 and authentication required for some users groups.
We used passive ftp on Dreamweaver machine as result was the same.
It seems Dreamweaver do not authenticate with the proxy.
The port used in dreamweaver is 21, we tried other ports but with same result.
The ftp connection with a normal browser fuctions properly.
How to resolve the problem?

When using a browser the FTP connection usually goes over HTTP; it's a bit different to using the FTP Proxy itself.

Can you use command-line FTP from the client machine?
Are you opening the FTP connection directly to the remote server or to the proxy?
Are you using Intercepts?

FTP Help

Postby itgmorigia » Feb 03 06 12:55 am

The ftp command line from windows XP pro SP2 goes wrong:
Here some samples of ftp output

H:\>ftp www.racine.ra.it
Connesso a racine.racine.ra.it.
500 WinGate Engine Access Denied
Utente (racine.racine.ra.it:(none)): test
Connessione chiusa dall'host remoto.

H:\>ftp proxy.itgmorigia.istituto.local
Connesso a itgsproxy.istituto.local.
500 WinGate Engine Access Denied
Utente (itgsproxy.istituto.local:(none)): test
Connessione chiusa dall'host remoto.

By the way: default settings of clients are without default gateway and proxy settings applied in internet preferences; however I tried ever with default gateway pointed to the proxy machine with the same result.

The wingate proxy server uses intercepts and have a policy linked to ftp services wich requires authentication for some Active Directory groups.
I don't know how to get past the authentication because after the name the connection immediately close as seen in above examples.

Thanks for your help...

If you open a browser window from the client and then try to FTP does it work properly?

Would it be possible for you to export the WinGate registry using Advanced Options and email it to me. That is the easiest way for me to check through the setup / policies.

Once all sessions from a machine is closed (Such as all browser windows) the machine drops from Authenticated to Assumed. In that state Dreamweaver could not raise the user's security level to Authenticated so a workaround would need to be used.

1. Use another authentication schema, such as the Qbik Auth Tool, WGIC or GateKeeper (Auth only).

2. Adjust the behavior of WinGate to not automatically downgrade to Assumed once all sessions are closed. More details can be found in this post.

3. Recrafting of policies to allow access to specific sites without requiring authentication (If desirable / not required)
