How to make WinGate consider network interface as External

Postby kiav » Apr 26 06 10:46 pm

Hello, I have 2 PCs in my home network (192.168.1.1 - WinGate Server 6.1 PC, 192.168.1.2 - WGIC PC). I don't use MS ICS.

WinGate Server PC has second network interface (Ethernet, IP 10.100.23.225). All network accessible through this interface is External and untrusted.

How to "tell" to WinGate Server that 10.100.23.225 interface is External?

Hi

In GateKeeper, go to the network tab, double-click on the adapter, and select "external" for the type of network that adapter is connected to.

adrien, thank you.

I entered into the Gate Kepper, found the Network tub. But I cannot find any network adapter there. There are all Network connections in my system on that tub. I double-click network connection that I want to be External.

I find there a group "What type of network does this adapter connect to?" with three variants the can be selected - "Auto detect (currently Internal)", "An internal protected network", "An external untrusted network (e.g. the Internet)".

Unfortunatly when I select "An external untrusted network (e.g. the Internet)" the choice spontaneously returnes to the "Auto detect (currently Internal)"

I found in documentation this text: "Once the engine is started it examines the IP address details of any network interfaces it finds and determines whether they are internal (Local network) or External interfaces (Internet connections). WinGate pre-determines this based on the IP address details that are set on the interface."

How to make Wingate no to set the interface usage automaticly or what IP setings need I setup for this interface to be "Auto detect (currently External)"?

Hi

You are in the right place there.

Once per second WinGate examines all network interfaces to see if anything has changed (become unavailable or available etc). If anything changes, WinGate refreshes the list of adapters in GateKeeper. If you have a dialog open when this happens, the previous setting is restored.

On some systems, due to an issue with the way WinGate does the comparisons, it thinks something is changing each time. This doesn't really affect the operation of Wingate, but it can make it difficult to modify settings for an adapter.

In this case, if you click on the radio button, and immediately hit the enter key, you can beat it, and make the setting.

We are working to resolve this issue as well.

There is a registry override as well (which is what this dialog in GateKeeper sets), but it is a little more involved - if you have no luck with the dialog, let me know and I can tell you how to find the registry override.

How to make WinGate consider network interface as External

I want to achieve this senario as well, but with a little modification.

I am using a cable Connection connected with Ethernet in my server. It is set as External Adapter by Wingate. Now I have also installed a DSL connection for Backup purpose thru USB port. That DSL Adapter is set as Internal by Wingate currently.

What should I do that, when cable goes offline it should start using DSL? Also should I manually set DSL Adapter as External as well? That will make two External Adapters, then which one will be used by Wingate for users. I use proxy for internet at client machines.

Both the Connections stay on at all times i-e I do not switch them off.

Consideration: When cable goes Offline, the cable Ethernet Adapter will still show connected. How can Wingate check if it is receiving bytes from a certain connection and switch to other connection. Both use Static IPs.
