Help with setting up SMTP for external users

Postby peter twartz » May 06 06 4:16 pm

I have struggles for ages trying to find the right balance that allows the use of the SMPT server from external, without opening the the SMTP server to open relay.

Wingate is our mail serverand is configured to allow full access from internal users and USER/PASS from external users.

From inside on the LAN all is well, and when I am away interstate I can collect POP mail without any problem, but I cant send mail.

The Wingate logs show that I "failled Authorisation" and am considered a "guest", and justifibly a guest cannot use the SMTP as a relay.

However in Outlook, my account settings are such that I have the "My outgoing server requires authentication" box ticked, and my user name and password entered.

The only way I get it to work, is by setting the IP I am call ing from as a assumed user, and then everything is OK.

Whilst this works reliably, it is not convenient when in a hotel room. Currently I log into my server with pcAnywhere, check for new mail, look for the IP address that has been denied, and then make that an assumed user.

I have read the Wingate Mail 6.0 document and that does not help me.
Anyone any ideas?

How do I force Wingate to recognise the USER/PASS
Cheers

Hi Peter,

1. So outlook is your email client; which user database are you using in WinGate? WinGate’s, Windows, Windows Remote AD?

2. Can you turn on debug logging for the SMTP server in WinGate; does indicate where the error is? You can create a support ticket to send it in and reference this forum post.

**You could also do your authentication remotely with the Qbik Auth tool; a small tool that will sit in your system tray. You will need to bind the remote control service to the external adapter, and open port 808 from the internet to WinGate; the remote control service in WinGate provides authentication, as well as allowing a Remote Session of GateKeeper (if your license allows it); only administrators can use the GateKeeper to configure the WinGate engine.

**I have talked to one of our lead developers about this, and you can expect it to be a secure way to authenticate; the Qbik Auth tool can be downloaded form here:
