Is wingate for me?

Postby sherlonb » May 03 07 10:16 am

Hi there, I'm network administrator here in a small company. On the remote location, there's 3 pc's. All pc's need to access data via http, https, ftp and mail. One pc has an EVDO connection which we cannot share because every time we share that connection via Internet connection sharing, whenever the EVDO disconnects and reconnects, the share settings no longer exist and need to be done over. I figure our ISP doesn't want sharing of the EVDO connection or it's not possible. I've looked it up online and all instructions to share EVDO indicate the same method i used which is via the connection sharing properties page.
So here's the setup, the main pc gets through with all services. In order for ftp and mail to go through, the vpn must be connected (to obtain a private address from our ftp/mail server at the main office). Http(s) isn't a problem, just ftp and mail from other pc's i'm having a problem with. I've tried other proxy software to share the main connection in order for the other 2 pc's to transmit data through the main pc with the EVDO and vpn connected with no success. Only http(s) traffic goes through. What i want to know is what's the solution to this? Can wingate do this? Can i just hack the EVDO unit? What are my options and cost implications if any?

Thanks a lot in advance,
Sherlon.

Why don't you ring them up so you actually know for sure? They may be able to help you with a recommended way?

So if others say it works, have you considered that your network topography or computer running this EVDO connection has configuration problems?

Sound like you want to use NAT - If you do install WinGate then make sure you add in the Extended Networking Service (ENS) option, and point the LAN Clients gateways to the Internal side of the WinGate server - also make sure they can resolve internet domain names; i.e. that their DNS server can.

There is a pricing link at the top of the WinGate.com webpage, when you drill into the pricing it will also have a link to the different license types.

Hi there, thanks for your response.
Apparently our ISP configured our EVDO units to prohibit networking it or use connection sharing on it. I called them in on it so that'll be why I wasn't getting through with connection sharing. Also, there isn't a problem with the topology or that particular system configuration. Tried the unit on another pc and reconfigured the gateways accordingly with no success. I'm going to make one last attempt at it and in the meantime, I'll have my boss look into purchasing wingate and hopefully, that solves all problems.

Thanks again,
Sherlon.
