Pricing question

Postby George in Seattle » Jul 06 07 6:08 pm

I'm looking to buy the Pro version of Wingate but not sure how many users to specify. How are the # of users calculated for pricing purposes? Should I figure in the number of simultaneous external connections (at any given time) in addition to the total number of local users? By local, I mean those on my LAN. By external, I mean those connecting from the internet. Thanks!

I think Wingate's Licensing only counts internet -> external and that is count is per computer accessing (but then again it might not, and count both ways)

As for user count:
If you have 10 computers, but only 6 will access the internet at any time, then you can have a 6 user license. If more then 6 machines try to connect the other machines will be blocked until a 'slot' is free.

It does count both ways - because if you did not count the internet clients then customers could just set their network card pointing towards the LAN as EXTERNAL and they would get unlimited concurrent connections (but not NAT).

That’s pretty much correct
- And you can also have as many mail boxes as you want.
- At a later date you could add a second 6 user license to make the installation a 12 User count.
- At a later date you can use the License Maintenance Wizard to do an online upgrade of your license - generally the cost is the difference between the listed price plus about a $10 administration overhead (and I won't mention version protection, it may affect the pricing a bit more):
https://commerce.qbik.com/purchase.php
- You could also have a 12 User WinGate Pro License, and a VPN Gateway license for a three computer LAN.

Some parts of WinGate do not consume a license count (and I need to update this because there could have been some small changes):

Servers / Services that do not consume license counts:

DHCP
Winsock Redirector Service (WRS) Control Channel - WRS is the server side to WinGate Internet Client (WGIC)
DNS
Remote Control Service (where GateKeeper logs on to configure the WinGate engine and some other authentication methods).
SMTP Server - Does not apply for INTERNAL connections - EXTERNAL connections will consume.
POP3 Collector
Routing
DNS/WINS Resolver

With regards to WinGate VPN licensing:

1. Each side of the VPN needs to have its own license.
2. If you want to share the LAN where the WinGate VPN installation is then you would need a Gateway license.
3. If you had a Gateway license for a 3 User LAN, then that means that three computer on your network can be connected to at the same time by an unlimited number of remote VPN users - and I believe that the WinGate server will not consume a license count in that VPN Gateway scenario but you can still use it’s resources.

I will try and update that WinGate list in the near future - unless a bigger fish comes along and put's his mark down.

Thanks, I figured it applied both ways for that very reason actually. As it happens, I have more incoming connections than outgoing.

I have done some drafts in the knowledge base to help with any licensing questions:
