Wingate fails when transparent proxy is enabled

Mar 28 08 11:05 am

Hi all.

I am not so new with Wingate but I can't just take it any more.
I am using the trial version of Wingate and Puresight.

Here is my setup:

Dell OptiPlex Gx280 with 1G memory.
3 network cards (1 external, 2 Internal)

Here is my problem:

I installed a fresh copy of Windows XP Pro with all the latest drivers and patches, After that I installed Wingate the latest version available from this site, Everything went well no errors no nothing. Got activation keys to Wingate and Puresight. Set Wingate to block all the ports except from the ones that I want to be available to my clients. Set Wingate to be a transparent proxy to capture port 80. (The only available are DNS, DHCP, HTTP, SSL and Live Messenger), Set Puresight to filter the sites that I don't want my clients to have access to.

Everything is working. I can see what the clients are doing and everything that goes around my network, I used the TCP\IP patch to unlock the 10 half connections and set it to the maximum available (I even tried less).

Every client gets his IP address without any problem he can surf to every where if Puresight doesn't limit him.

HERE IS MY BIGGEST PROBLEM!!

After a few minutes\hours or it could be some times days Gatekeeper stops showing me what goes on in my network I need to close it and reopen it, Sometimes I can see it updates again so I don't really care, But sometimes I get some calls from my client to let me know that they don't have internet, I sign in I can see that Gatekeeper stopped responding and when I am relaunching it I am getting an error message that Gatekeeper could get any data from the Wingate server. The only way to solve it is to restart the machine, So I thought maybe Puresight causes it. I removed it and even reinstalled Windows again (I know it's too much but I want it to work 24\7) Set everything again and let it run and I got the same error again. I disabled all the logging or any server that I thought that could cause it but with no luck. Every time I am getting the same error message after I am getting some calls from the clients.

After all that and all the trying and tweaking and even changing all the network cards or even use my home computer testing it still happens.

The only way it works 24\7 without any problems or error is when the transparent make is off and in the Wingate's firewall port 80 is open (Duh) there isn't any problem at all and everything is great, But I must use Puresight to filter the sites. I got a phone call from some of the parents to block it. And as you know Puresight doens't work without tranparent proxy.

So now I really don't know what to do. I tried everything set everything and I got to say that I can tweak Wingate and let it work like I want, But without filtering I don't need Wingate and won't pay for it and will find some other solutions. I look into Squid in Linux but Wingate was so easy so I thought I owe Qbik to write here before quiting wingate.

Thank you all

Hi

We've had a few customers with issues with WinGate stability.

We don't think it has anything to do with PureSight.

There are a few tips though which have been found to help.

1. Don't leave GateKeeper open for extended periods of time, just when you need to look. It consumes memory whilst connected.

2. Don't use filtering on the history for what to store, we've identified some stability issues with this.

3. If you have any other AV software on that machine, make sure it's not set to scan the WinGate folders.

4. If you have more than one default gateway, make sure they are all valid.

If none of this helps, please submit a support ticket at http://support.qbik.com and our support-desk will go through a discovery process with you to try tracking it down.

Regards

Adrien

Thank you for your replay.

1.Gatekeeper is closed when it's not needed.

2. I didn't understood how could I do that. Can you please explain how can I do it?
I know it has nothing to do with Puresight because even if Puresight is not installed the engine can stop to respond at any time.

3. I didn't installed any AV softwares.

4.The only gateway that I have is 10.0.0.138. its the router IP. No problem there.

I will submit a ticket.
Thank you
