Cannot download pop3 email from ISP server with Wingate

Postby itguy » May 10 08 9:25 am

Hi, I'm using WinGate on a Windows 2000 server with the evaluation license. I have the email set up according to Scenario 3 in the manual, and I'm simply trying to do a test download of an email from a single account on my ISP mail server to WinGate (I have not even gotten to the part where an email client downloads the email from WinGAte.

However, when I go to the "System" tab, right click on "Email" and choose "Run POP3 Mail Collection", WinGate reports that it has performed the pop3 download, but there is nothing in the mail queue, and the email remains on the ISP despite the option to delete the email after download.

It is not a problem with the ISP, since I have another email program that I currently use (on a different machine), and it is able to download email all day with the server settings I have entered. I also have confirmed that the webmail test server does have internet access and can connect to the ISP mail server.

I also have confirmed that I have the domain set up correctly, and the collection area set up with the right user.

I've gone through the setup instructions a few times and I cannot figure out why I can't get the email to download.

Hi,

Just now I did run a Pop3 Collection to spam account I monitor and it worked ok still.

What you could do is enable all the logging features in the SMTP server as this is the service which will handle the transaction and put the mail in you local box for internal download.

As I was trying to POP3 collect the logging did show an error when I had it incorrectly configured with no valid local mail account // box.

05/10/08 14:36:43 127.0.0.2 <system> 0000001513 Traffic 930 330 0 0 10s

The logs are in %program files\Wingate\Logs\SMTP Server\

Issue with domain name

Postby itguy » May 13 08 6:10 am

OK, I think I may see the problem. I looked in the POP3 log, and saw that Wingate appears to be trying to use an invalid account name to download the email. Here is the situation:

My ISP's mail server is called "mail.myisp.com"

My email domain is called "mydomain.com"

So, I have accounts such as "myaccount@mydomain.com" which are located on server "mail.myisp.com". What WinGate appears to be doing, is trying to download an account called "myaccount@mydomain.com@mail.myisp.com" which, of course, is grossly incorrect. If I leave out the "@mydomain.com" in the server definitions, then Wingate will try to download email for "myaccount@mail.myisp.com" which is also incorrect.

In order for this to work, I have to be able to configure Wingate to connect to server "mail.myisp.com" and log in with "myaccount@mydomain.com". However, there does not appear to be a way to configure Wingate to do this.

Am I missing something?

That address you are seeing doesn't represent the email address that WinGate is collecting email for. It actually represents the username WinGate is using to login with, and the mail server that WinGate is connecting to. i.e. username@mailserver.

If the username you use to login to you ISP's mail server is myaccount@mydomain.com (It's very common to have a full email address as a username), what you are seeing is perfectly normal. When put into the username@mailserver format, this displays as"

myaccount@mydomain.com@myisp.com

Can you copy and paste an extract from your POP3 Collection log into the forum for us. We may be able to identify the problem for you.

Make sure you edit any personal details before posting logs to the forum as the forum is publicly viewable.

Here's the log

Postby itguy » May 16 08 3:45 pm

Hi,

It's an authentication problem, but I've re-entered the password and verified the accounts in the Wingate setup. I also know that the account is valid and have verified teh correct password on the ISP mail server by logging into the ISP mail server using their manual web interface. In addition, I have another email program, similar to Wingate's email function, which is currently running and can download from that same mail server just fine.

So, somehow, the authentication information that wingate is sending to my ISP's mail server is incorrect, but I have no idea what is incorrect.

Here's the log excerpt (I edited the domain names):

Hi,

The CAPA is looking for capabilities from the POP3 server, what you could try if you haven't already is to vary the authentication methods in Wingate's collection feature from 'use best method available' to one of the others perhaps.
