Connection teaming probs.

Postby sccs » May 30 08 2:08 am

hi.

i currently have wingate running multiple wan connections. i wish to access 2 different servers from one main pc in order to double the download speed.

this is working perfectly, except, instead of doubling the speed it still only downloads at 1/2 the combined wan speeds.

current setup.

2 x 20mbit wan connections
2 x gigabit network cards
quad core 6600 ruinnig @ 3.5ghz
4gb ram
vista ultimate x64

both connections will on their own max out no problems.

any suggestions as to why wingate is capping the speed @ 20mbit.

also it matters not how many wans are connected as the same problem happens when connected to 4 10mbit connections wingate still caps at 20mbit

One thing that you need to understand about bandwidth aggregation is that your multiple internet connections will still remain as multiple internet connections. Because of the nature of the Internet Protocol, combining multiple internet connections to make a single, faster connection is impossible.

What WinGate can do to help make use of your multiple internet connections is rotate outgoing connections around your internet gateways. This means if you start two downloads, WinGate can perform each download through a different gateway so that both downloads can obtain the maximum available speed of the internet connection it is performed through, rather than both downloads being performed through a single internet connection and only receiving a portion of the available bandwidth. So you will never natively obtain a download speed greater than your fastest internet connection can provide.

The way you can get around this is by downloading a single file in multiple pieces. You can get downloader software like flashget that will split a download into multiple pieces rather than one long download. Because each piece is downloaded as a separate session, a single file can be downloaded across multiple internet connections. Since both connections are being utilized for the same file, the download will perform faster.

What you obtain from having multiple gateways is the ability to pump more connections out to the internet without feeling as much of a performance hit from over burdened connections. Tasks that involve many small downloads, like browsing the internet, will be much more efficient as the connections are rotated around the available gateways. This is also a good way to improve internet availability in offices with many users.

I hope this has clarified exactly what gateway rotation in WinGate does for you and why you are not getting 40mbit download speeds. Let us know if you have any questions.

it does but it dosent.

im not rotating the connections.

im
passing all traffic on port 1234 to server 1 via connection 1
passing all traffic on port 1235 to server 2 via connection 2

thus eliminating the rotation problem.

all traffic is multi connection based, so its not bottle necking there either.

when i startup either connection on its own then that connection will run at 20mb without problem.

i know what im doing is correct. as i have previously teamed 6 2mb connections and i got 12mb which worked perfectly.

so if 6 2mb connections can be combined into 1 12mb connection then the rotation u mentioned is not the problem,

no matter what configuration of connections and speeds i use i can only ever get 20mb

hope that explains the problem better,

If you are not using WinGate's gateway rotation, how are you combining these connections to speed up your download? Can you make a new support ticket for this issue and include the following information with it, I believe I can be of more assistance there.

1. WinGate Registry
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Registry

2. WinGate Config Report
GateKeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> Save Config Report

3. ipconfig/all from one LAN Client
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig/all >> C:\ipa-client.txt

4. ipconfig/all from the WinGate Server
(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig/all >> C:\ipa-server.txt

For the forums information, we found that the speed limit was not in WinGate but the operating system it was installed on. Raising the half-open connection limit allowed an extra 10Mb/s.

Where can I find manual on how to team multiple cable connections and share them to a LAN of several computers?

The WinGate Help File has all the information you need on how to enable gateway rotation. Check under "WinGate Services -> Common Service configuration screens -> Gateways"
