Wingate crashing

Postby breese » Nov 24 09 1:21 pm

I have spent a lot of time reading different posts on system locking up.

My system (2nd new one) is carshing where there are no Event logs generated.
This is a W2k3 server with dual 2.8 processors.
This machine was a web server that never gave me any issues untill I did a clean install of the OS and installed WinGate.

By chance today, I discovered the following log file on my server

//=====================================================
QBIK EXCEPTION INFORMATION (23/11/2009 17:52:14)

EXE: C:\Program Files\WinGate\WinGate.exe
(created 15/10/2009 07:23:16, size = 2822208

Exception code: C0000005 ACCESS_VIOLATION

Sugestions?

I would also like to know why I have Remote Access logs and what is happening seeing I Should have it turned off

When you say crashing, did you mean BSOD, blue screen crash? Do you have minidumps generated by the system when it crashed?

Do you have other network-related software installed on this machine, like firewalls, bandwidth control, etc?

This is a clean system.
No other firewalls, not even anti-virus because I have read all the reports of differnt people having issues.

I do have a few utils to keep performance up (Uniblue spyeraser and reg fix).
The system is configured to get MS updates but not install them without me.

Since no dump is being created, is there anything in the event logs which might give you a clue as to where the conflict is occurring? Is the event log coming up clean?

The only error I can locate is the one i have posted.
There is nothing in Windows at all.

In all my years as a Windows tech, I have never seen a server hose up and not generate a log of some type.

Right now I have created a Performace log that is writing to disk every 5 seconds.
I am hoping to catch whatever it is in there.
all process's
both drives
all processers
both network cards.

Unless someone knows the answer to the error I have posted, I gusee it's a wait and see....

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!!!

Hi

that's created by our top-level exception filter.

It doesn't always indicate a stability problem, and unfortunately we've not found in the past the information to be particularly useful. Are there many of these files being created?

Regards

I have checked every log files from within 4 days.
Nothing.
Everything that has an entry for any day I had a system freeze goes from normal logging to Starting 'whatever' because I had to push the Reset Button to get the machine on-line.

I am now collecting Perf Logs.
If there is a specific list of something you want me to collect, let me know.
i will be more than happy to do it.

Hi

have you tried removing Spyeraser? I don't find good things about it on the net, and it looks like Uniblue has discontinued it. PC Mag panned it completely (v1.1 and 2.0). Not sure about current version (or even what version that is).

It is on the machine (added after the system freezing) and is not loaded on boot.
The latest versions have helped me a lot in finding things.

Seeing its not loaded, it has no effect on the system.

Can you name the process's that are loaded with Wingate?
I would like to make sure I am logging them in my Performance Logs....

We've found in the past even things that aren't "loaded" still can have an impact. E.g. various versions of ZoneAlarm would still have network drivers loaded by the system even if the service wasn't running, and the drivers would still interfere.

but if it was added after the system lock-up problem, then I guess it's unlikely to be causing it.

Problems like mouse not responding etc are very rare, and I can't recall any case where it was attributable to WinGate. Is the machine under much network load?

DSL Line... 768 up /6meg down
I limit the access to it but it can have times where the DSL is max out with me and family listening to music from my server.

Heavy load, nope... the processing power is way beyond the DSL access.
As the files show that I have uploaded
the 10/100 card handles to DSL line
the gig card (connected to a gig switch) handles the LAN.

There is no way there is enough load (even at full DSL speed) to drop this machine like this.

It was once a web server and now (with Wingate) a traffic cop.

Hmmm ... months later, have installed latest version of Wingate and all of a sudden my highly reliable VISTA Home Premium machine (latest SP, latest drivers for EVERYTHING, nothing extra loaded on boot) is freezing 1-3 times per day.

Windows does not log ANY event, in fact everything in the logs looks fine.

Mouse, keyboard and screen spontaneously freeze. I have progressively removed every driver (one-by-one and in groups in various combinations), any extra program that could be causing the problem, uninstalled every program that I had never used or could even remotely be causing this, updated every driver from the keyboard / mouse/ screen through to ACPI, chipset, eSATA, you name it and I have updated it.

I have run every virus, malware checker under the sun ... and it still happens.

I have taken out the memory boards and replaced them - same problem. I have removed all external devices (hard-drives, etc) ... same problem.

Each time requires a hard reset - which as you know can cause all sorts of other ugly problems - which takes me time to check and resolve.

Nine times out of ten Wingate seems fine, but 10% of the time Wingate looks fine but is not running properly. It does not serve pages to clients nor respond to service requests. On opening on my "server" Wingate asks for the administrator password but then provides an error message to say it can't connect - BUT all HTTP and other services on the server seem to be working. After a soft boot Wingate then seems to correct itself again okay.

I'm honestly stumped by this one - any suggestions or help offered?

Taking my call for help back...

Dazzur... nice to see I am not the only one.. What you explained it the exact problem.

I turned on Performance logging on my W2K3 box. This time when it happaned, I got the proof.

Towards the bottom of the list of items I was monitoring is Wingate.
You can see where it is forcing items at 100%.
Later on other items, you can see some memory and network items at 100%
All the time the CPUs are almost idle.

There is a real problem here.
If you don't know how to open the file,
Start / Programs / Administrative Tools / Performance
Right click on the Graph and go to Properties

Click on the Source Tab and then Log files
Choose the Wingate_Data file
Click on Data
Click on Add and then choose All counters and All instances
With the Pull Down for Performance Object, Step thru each one and click add.
When they are all loaded, click close and ok

Let me know what you find...
