Can Wingate replace ICS in Windows?

Postby bjorn5555 » Dec 08 10 11:20 am

Correct me if I am wrong, I am not so young any longer, a lot of new stuff.I want to know.
I thought I used ICS in Windows 95 but it came with W98SE at first.

My first PC came with two floppy drives and MS-DOS ver 2.0.
Before that, several basic computers and one 16 bit Texas. The PC was only 8 bits.

What did I use before to share the internet connection? (Windows 95)
I think I remember Wingate and that it had a built in NAT server.
Am I wrong? or if it was Wingate and a NAT server?
Since, (I think 1999) and Win98SE, I have used ICS but 6 months ago I got a dsl router and now its impossible.

Today, I have no idea about what Wingate is, or how it works.

Now I use WinXP PRO SP3 (and the fix for this problem) and there will be no Windows 7. Maybe Linux.

I can use ICS with several 3G USB modems but my ISP now is Vodafone in Spain. That seems to be the big problem.

ICS or LAN (MSHOME) does not work with their router but with the router also came a 3G USB modem and I have the same problem with this.
This USB modem can connect to the router OR a computer.

Question here, what is the problem? The router or Vodafone? Or both? I think the software (in router and modem)is not compatible with ICS.
AVG Internet suite blaime it as malware. Should I trust that? But strange, most program used like browsers Explorer, Firefox and this week I added Opera.
These too are malware if connected to Vodafone and so are bittorrent and other download programs.
But if I connect with other 3G modem ISP they are not malware. This is very hard to understand.
Vodafone works very good and so do the USB modem and the router AS LONG as I do not use ICS or LAN (MSHOME). If so, everything will freeze more and more
until it is not possible to reboot without reset.
But this also hit Vodafone maybe as the router now is "broken" but still I have the problem with the 3G modem?? Malware?? Virus?? With AVG Internet Suite 2011 running?
In both cases, software from Vodafone.
I have 4 other USB modems I can use for ICS/LAN but not this one from Vodafone.

I have a possible conflict between ICS/LAN and Vodafone software causing my computers to be like stoned.

Now I wonder if there is a point in returning to Wingate if it now ever worked with shared internet connection. (i am not sure)

I want to use one of my computers as a server/proxy/router for at least one of the rest of my computers. XP

If I have a working LAN. Two PCs and MSHOME working.
I tried to connect to Vodafone with the wireless USB modem, at the same moment I pressed connect my LAN will go away.
Problem with network ports. I dont know how to fix this. One way is to uninstall the firewall as it seems to reset these ports.
But the firewall IS NOT the problem.
My LAN is back and I press connect again and my LAN is gone and no firewall to uninstall to fix the ports.
This is a problem only with Vodafone, not with other 3G modems.

I use Acronis so it will take 3 minutes to load an older install of XP and I think I have done this for 20 times now. Since friday.
My LAN will not work with Vodafone but with other ISP.
Its hard to understand this. Why this problem?

With the router I got more problems or maybe just gateway/DNS problems I cannot fix.

Do anyone know if the problem is the same with all DSL routers?
If I can use Wingate to work around this problem, will Wingate work with dsl routers?
Will Wingate work with Vodafone in Spain?

A week ago, I had a "visit" or "univited guest" on my computer, or at least 3 visits. I know one of them for sure. Vodafone support.
He placed some config files for the router on my harddisk without asking. (while we was talking by the phone so I watched it happening) The only info he needed was my telephone number. To see, is one thing, to understand is an other thing. The support use keyboard to configure the router but the files was named as config(something) for router. If they maybe was not placed there but generated there I do not understand but I saw it happen. No matter, placed or generated, its an access to my hard disk.
Also the phone depends on the router. Now the router does not work since friday. I have no internet and no phone.
I will recive a new router within a week but I will never ever trust such thing in my house. I want to get rid of it as soon as possible
but I need something to connect to internet with. OR protection. If I need a new hardware I want to buy it myself. But for some reason, I am already using VPN (for several years) and firewall
The big problem here I was connected to a VPN service and was running AVG Internet Suite 2011 then these files was placed on my hard disk.
At this moment it is an OPEN VPN and I like the usual VPN better. Open VPN is too easy to break the connection. There is no warning for this. The icon is green.
Connected, but its not true. On VPN I can use reconnect. Open VPN is extremly unsafe to use due to the fact that the client hide broken connection.

Today, my passwords are changed. I cannot read mail in my two mail accounts. One at my own site (domain)and the other mail service is hotmail.
But I also have problems with keyboard and details missing, parts missing in webpages. Many password do not work but is it true or is it the keyboard?
How do I know anything here? This is strange and I do not belive in ghosts.

So, I use VPN and it seems to me that I have a very good reason to continue with this. I want 100% stealth on all ports.

But it will not help as long as my ISP have free access to my router and computers. I have traffic on my computers that I do not cause myself.
It could be that heavy that I am not able to brows any pages. or do anything else. They can be occupied to 100% and no AV or disk maintans is running.
As I mentioned, I have a lot of experience to reinstall XP too.
Some of this is new to me since friday but the problem with Vodafone have last for 6 months now and I need vacations after all this work.

I need advice, and it is very urgent, thanks.

Hi

WinGate should work fine in your scenario. We have however had some issues with 3G modems (connected directly to the WinGate computer) on Vista and later, since they use a different type of network media (raw IP rather than ethernet). XP has not been a problem though.

If the physical internet connection is not on the WinGate computer (e.g. you have an external DSL/NAT device) then WinGate doesn't care how you connect.

I'd recommend just downloading WinGate, and activating a trial license to make sure you can get it working.

Thanks, I am not able to try Wingate now as I have very big problems with everything.
The computers are like "stoned" if I connect the router or the wireless USB modem from my ISP.
But I am waiting for replacement of both USB modem and router.

But if I got it right I can try Wingate on two computers using a USB modem from an other ISP?
I will fix a clean boot partion on each computer with a new clean XP install.
I can try Wingate without involving the router/USB modem OR my ISP but the connection will be very limited in speed.

If it works well, next step is to use Wingate with the new router. or "router" (its a strange box, not like a normal "router")
Now I use a cross over cable but should I use the router as a hub?
Does it work like a hub? I am not sure.
If I want to connect two or three clients to the server I need one network card for each?
I used "terminators" years ago at end of cable on a T-connector but it was with the old coaxial cable,
today I dont know how it works. Only one LAN card in each computer as modem was "USB to telephone line".

What is the difference between using the router as hub (if possible) vs connect two three clients
to the server? Or do I also need a hub?

Will the phone line work? Both phone and dsl depends on router. Router connects to LINE, two ports for phones,
and 4 ports for computers. And some USB connetions BUT LAN built in does not work, nor USB units.
The only thing I could connect was the USB modem if something wrong with telephone cable. If so, its possible
to make phone calls over the USB modem.
I dont understand that shit router and I dont like it. LAN didnt work, printer, UBS memmory sticks, extern HDD didnt work.
Just four separate connections to internet.
If the new one works as it should I do not know yet.

Will AVG IS 2011 work with Wingate? and vpn? = all ports stealth.

I cant find any way to connect client and server.
Can I not use cross over cable?
Wingate does not like ICS so what IP should I use?

Hi,

You can use a cross-over cable to connect your client to the WinGate server.

What IP addresses do you have on your WinGate machine? Give the client an IP address in the same subnet as the WinGate server, for example:
WinGate server
External IP address: assigned by router
External default gateway: assigned by router
External DNS: assigned by router
LAN IP address: 192.168.0.1
LAN default gateway: (left blank)
LAN DNS: (left blank)

Client
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

Please help me if you know what to do about this problem.
My ISP have told me to use their solution ONLY to have a LAN with the router but it does not work.
Also USB memories, hard drives, printers does not work connected to the router.
Its a very bad software.

I still have not got the replacement for the very bad router.
I use the "free" 3G modem but it has the same software as in router and the new router will have the same software too.

This software is not compatible with ICS in Windows and it seems to me that I have the same problem with Wingate.

My ISP want full control over my internet connection and telephone line.
I can connect 4 computers separate at the same time but not in network.

I have no telephone working for last 11 days because of broken router.

I need help. What to do with this ISP?

As my telephone line depends on the router I cannot buy my own router.

I cannot accept that my ISP can access both my router and my hard disks over the phone line.

I use IP 192.168.0.1 for server. 192.168.0.2 for router. 192.168.0.5 for client.
But, local network do not work with ISP software.

I reinstall XP, my LAN is working. To access internet I must use the 3G modem and its software and if I do I have no LAN.

Reinstall XP LAN and ICS is working with 3G modem from other ISP but this connection is very expensive.
Probably also Wingate work with this ISP but I cannot afford that.

A dl of 1GB cost the same as 1 month ADSL 10 Mbit with no limits.
