Where to download WinGate Internet Client (WGIC)?

Postby chloh » Oct 22 15 8:15 pm

I am running WinGate 8.4.2.4814 and using Active Directory Connector. In the Activity window (WinGate > Monitoring > Activity), I cannot see clients running on Windows XP, I can only see clients running other versions of Windows. Those users running on Windows XP seems not to be recognized by WinGate, since they are still blocked when accessing sites specifically allowed for them.

So I figured that I should install WGIC for those running on Windows XP and it may help WinGate to authenticate them, but I can't find the download page. Where is it? Thanks!

Hi

the installer for the WinGate Client is deployed with WinGate when you install it, check the "Client" folder under the WinGate program folder.

Thanks. I've installed WGIC on a Windows XP client and restarted the machine. When I open WGIC Applet, I can see that it can find my WinGate server.

But I still can't see this client in WinGate's Activity when it is accessing internet. And I found that the Activity actually shows another Windows XP client properly. It's just this machine that is not showing up. What could be the problem?

Ok, when the Windows XP client is using static IP, the Activity window won't show it. Changing the client to use dynamic IP (WinGate Server is the DHCP server) causes the Activity window to show it and solves the website blocking issue.

But is there anyway to make WinGate recognize clients using static IP?

Hi

when it's using dynamic IP, is the IP it gets in the same (correct) subnet as when you set it to a static IP?

WinGate doesn't care what the IP is, but it needs to be in the correct subnet.

Yes, the dynamic IP and static IP have the same subnet (255.255.255.0). I just tried to set back to static IP, and the problem comes back.

Hi

sorry, I didn't mean same subnet mask, I mean being allocated IPs in the same logical subnet.

If one IP is 192.168.0.x and another is 192.168.2.X, they aren't in the same subnet.

Yes, they are in the same subnet, which is 192.168.0.x.

Hi,

What is different about the two addresses? Are you getting a default gateway when you set to dynamic that you're not setting when it's static? Can you take a screen shot of the IPCONFIG screen for both static and dynamic addresses and post it here please?

Thanks,

Matt

Here's the screenshot. The top part is static IP (192.168.0.30), the bottom part is dynamic IP (192.168.0.66).
The Host Name, Primary Dns Suffix and DNS Suffix Search List for both dynamic and static IP are exactly the same.

Hi

we saw problems long ago where IE on XP would sometimes not attempt to make a connection via a layered service provider (like the WGIC) if there was a default gateway set on the adapter. Instead it would connect directly using the default gateway.

It used to happen when you ran the network setup wizard.

So the solution back then was often to remove the default gateway setting to force it.

Try removing the default gateway setting and see if that changes the behaviour.

Regards

I tried setting the client to static IP and removed the "Default Gateway", same result.
But never mind, I'll stick with dynamic IP for now. Thanks anyway!
