No internet after install

I am setting up a new server. I am using an Intel NUC, so I am also using a SIIG USB 3.0 to 10/100/1000 Mb/s Gigabit Ethernet Adapter (JU-NE0211-S1. I have my external connection on the USB NIC. After loading the OS (2008 R2), installing all the drivers, and installing all updates, it is time to install Wingate. So far, so good, internet and all work fine...... Then I install Wingate 8.5.5. After the reboot, I have no connection to the internet. The connection still has the same IP, it is still connected, but I just cannot get an internet connection. If I uninstall Wingate, the internet returns. I am confident I am missing something simple (at least I hope)

Hi,

The WinGate Network driver does not support USB drivers. If you don't need to use the WinGate Network driver, which provides NAT, firewall and VPN then you can disable the driver, or not install it during installation and WinGate will run fine as a proxy.

I use Wingate for NAT & firewall. Can and will Wingate support USB drivers? If not, I guess I just wasted a big chunk of change for the NUC.

what kind of adapters are they? USB ethernet adapters normally work fine with WinGate, but some 3G/4G adapters or mobile broadband adapters which don't emulate an ethernet layer don't

I'd suggest removing the default gateway setting from the adapter that's not actually connected to the internet.

Default gateway is an instruction to the routing system that this is where to forward packets for non-local routes (i.e. the Internet). if you send internet packets into your LAN (cul-de-sac) they won't get to the internet.

I stand corrected, the internal NIC had no gateway listed.

so do you think there are no packets going out the internet-connected adapter?

Do you see the switch light flashing?

You could try things like a tracert to see which path the packets take.

Or if you would like we can maybe take a remote look if you have internet access on another machine you can run teamviewer on, and you can remote desktop to the NUC from there.

To return the NUC and go with a itx server board with 2 NICs. More expensive and a little bigger than I wanted. Thand for the replies.

We've used USB before, it should be no problem. I'll have a word to the support guys about advice on that.

Does the adapter even show up in the WinGate Management Network Adapters pane?

Does it include an advanced tab? That indicates WinGate has matched the adapter in the engine to the adapter in the driver.

Yes, it does have an Advanced tab. Also, from an earlier question, there is a lot of activity on the USB adapter.

Do you have another computer with net access that you can remote desktop to the NUC from? then I could use teamviewer to connect to that machine and then onto the NUC to see what's going on.

It might be worth a try to save you the pain of setting up another computer.
