ADSL and cable

i want to connect both ADSL and cable through the same single server.

has anyone done this and can they give some advice? i searched the knowledge base and found a brief mention but not much else........

is there any white paper or other general advice on what a process might be (or pitfalls.....) ?

at present the ADSL connection works well and the server runs a RAID-0-1 configuration through an adaptec 1200A with four x 40gb drives. I have 10/100 nics in place. Win2000 server. Intel p4 1gbRAM.

frinstance, in connecting the cable do i need to completely reconfigure the ADSL connection?

cable is telstraBP using std telstra issue software, adsl is 1.5mbps

Hi there

Although it is possible two have two different types of connections on the one machine WinGate will effectively only use one of these connections at the one time as there are several basic networking issues that arise from type of scenario.

The Internet connection on the machine is seen by WinGate as an outbound (external) interface and as such uses the DNS and Gateway entries for this network connection (usually assigned by the ISP at connection time) to preform its Internet access on behalf of the clients.

Unfortunately if you were to also have a cable modem installed it to would be also seen as an outbound interface with Gateway and DNS entries. Routing issues with traffic (not knowing which connection/Gateway to use etc) can occur and so this is why having different types of connections it is not recommended.

WinGate will handle using alternative dialup connections which it lists under its dialer section (often dial up type DSL modems will fall under this category). So if you were to have numerous ISPs (and as a result numerous dialup connections) WinGate can try each of these if one connection is not found to be available.

As an alternative you could think of having the ADSL connection/or Cable on a different machine and set some of your clients to use one WinGate server and some the other.

I have a second server and i was hoping to avoid setting up a second / separate lan.....

my adsl is not using static ip from the isp - does this mean vpn won't work either?

I want all machine to be able to see each other - for games etc....

If your ADSL has its ip address assigned everytime it connects, then it can make it a bit difficult for the WinGate VPN to work.
As remote WinGate VPN clients will need to know what IP address (of the VPN Host server) to connect to, and if this is constantly changing then obviously it will be difficult to keep track of this.

There are some programs available on the Internet which provide a DNS resolution on the fly for these types of scenarios so that if an IP address of a server changes then its DNS record/pointer can be updated as well.

However in your case you may be better to host the WinGate VPN on the cable connection if this maintains a static IP. This way once a VPN is configured the IP address will not need to be changed for the remote WinGate VPN clients configs.
