I have a problem that I have been unable to find a solution for thus far:
Windows 2000 Server
Wingate 5.2.3
Remote Admin Software
Anti Virus Software
THis is basically all that runs on the server. When the server starts, the socks proxy service will not start. This is what the log file says each time:
06/24/04 11:49:40 Error: Service failed startup on interface 10.0.0.1:1080 error 10013
06/24/04 11:49:40 Error: Service startup complete or partial failure
If I assign the service to a different port [such as 1089 rather than 1080] I manage to get the service to run, however, when the socks service does not run on the 1080 port, the NAT refuses to function [I don't know if this is normal behavior or not]
There has been occassion where I can assign the service to a port other than 1080, get it to start, and then assign it back to port 1080 and manage to keep it running, however this is not a real solution should the server ever get rebooted and I am not here.
Has anyone else had this problem or does anyone know what I can do to fix it. I am guessing that the reason is to do with another service on the PC using the 1080 socks port, however, I am unable to determine what service it is and shut it down. Any help would be much appreciated.

Gidday,
If you stop the WinGate engine and open a dos window, type netstat -an, do you see any entries for port 1080? If you do then something is listening on this port and will be stopping the Socks proxy from running. If you don't know what the application is then you can download NetPatrol from our website, it comes with a free 30 day trial. NetPatrol includes an application called PortList, if you run PortList it will tell you the application that is listening on the different ports.

Matt

I should have posted orginally, I did do as you said before I posted, however, I could not find any entries for port 1080.
However, I have fixed the problem.
Zone Alarm Pro 5.0 had been installed on this machine and was not running [all services were off within the windows services snap in], however, somehow it was interferring with this port. Once I uninstalled Zone Alarm the problem dissapeared.
Thankyou however for your reply, and thankyou for building and maintaining a great product!

We're glad you like it! We've found (as you have) that ZoneAlarm will interfere with WinGate even if it is turned off, the only way around this is to completely uninstall it.
Best regards,
Matt
