Share innaccessable

Jul 16 04 3:20 pm

I am running vpn between 2 offices, both just workgroups running on WinXP. I can connect alright, Ican see the other workgroup alright, I can open up the workstations alright, I can ping the workstations alright, but I can't browse the shares that I want to. Both offices are on different subnets, & the clients are running RIPv2. I have tried configuring the security but no matter what i do it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Hi Sam,

Do you have file and print sharing and NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled on the external adapters?

Are you getting prompted for a username when you try to access the shares? Are you able to see the shares? What happens if you type \\machinename?

Yes I have file & print sharing enabled & I have netbios overtcp/ip enabled. When I type \\machinename itopens up alright but then when i go to browse one of the shares it keeps coming back as inaccesable.

It sounds like this could be an MTU issue, you can test MTU size by typing
ping wingate_server -l 1400 (where 1400 is packet size) If this doesn't work then reduce the packet size until the ping is replied to.

If you need to lower the MTU size you can do this on the new version on the network tab by double clicking the adapter, you can view the MTU size on the details tab and change the MTU size on the advanced tab.

If you are not using the Release Candidate version 6 then you can download drtcp(http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp) from the internet and change MTU size with this.

Matt

Thanks for your prompt service. I tried what u suggested, I am running VPN Only, but the ping to the wingate server was fine with the MTU set 1400. This is the area message that I am getting:

\\Pc2\Premier7 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use the network resource.

The specified network is no longer available.

Pc2 is a winxp home machine, don't know if that will make a difference.

Thanks again

Sam

Go here http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp and download DrTCP. Set the mtu to 1350 and disable/enable tyhe network connection.

Hi Sam,

Are you using a username that has permission on the XP home machine? You may have to create an identical username, please try that and see how you get on.

Hi

I found on XP, that unless you create a share explicitly, then by default XP disables file and print sharing, which means you can't even browse it from the network.

When you create a share on a folder, you are prompted to then enable file and print sharing... even if these show as bound to your adapter, they are still disabled in some way until you do this.
