Online Games and Wingate

Jul 26 04 11:41 am

I want to run Wingate as a Proxy to play online games on my client PCs in my home network.

How easy is it to set up Wingate for online games on client pcs?

I'm mainly interested in Rise of Nations and Battlefied Vietnam.

Thanks

That's a rather long URL. Anyway, the basic gist from the knowledge base is this:

"Considerations for Online Gaming with WinGate
When attempting to play online gaming through WinGate there are a number of points that need to be understood to have it work correctly.

Due to the fact that WinGate is a proxy server, it only presents one IP address to the Internet. This can be an issue when more then one client behind WinGate wants to join the same game hosted by the same server on the Internet.

Since a large number of games/games servers will only allow one connection or session for every IP that attempts to connect to join a game, complications will arise, as clients from behind WinGate will of course appear to use the same IP.

As this is more of a universal problem with Proxy Server/Firewall scenarios, there has been several gaming standards created that allow multiple connections to the Game Server from one IP address. An example of this is Direct Play.

WinGate currently has built in support for Direct Play, which means that multiple clients from behind WinGate are able to connect to the same Game server (hosting a DirectPlay supported game) on the Internet simultaneously. .... "

Thanks for that, an informative and interesting read.

However, I am not savvy when it comes to such things, is there a step by step tutorial to get a game like Battlefield Vietnam or Rise of Nations working on my client PCs?

Sorry to ask so much.

Ask as much as you need. I've not tried running Rise of Nations or Battlefield Vietnam, but there are a few things you should keep in mind, try, etc.

First, the easiest way to ensure that you get the easiest possible configuration is to use NAT. This means, on your client PC, set the default gateway and DNS server to the WinGate PCs IP address. Then make sure that you get basic internet access, such as web browsing or email from the client PC.

If that works the games should theoretically work as well. (From one client at least ... ) and that should be all that is required for you to do.

If that doesn't work, let me know - then I'll take my copy of Rise of Nations into the office, see if I run into any problems there.

Hi Pascal,

Thanks for your help.

I have browsing and email working ok however still cant get any games to connect.

Instead of pampering to my every need (I thankyou greatly for this), I tend to use a lot of games through Gamespy Arcade and the All Seeing Eye.

Is it possible to connect to gamespy arcade through Wingate soemehow? I get cant connect to server message at the moment?

This might be better as it would provide help to more users.

Many Thanks again.
