Wingate indicates 'starting' all day long !

Postby ken » Jul 25 04 1:57 am

This is interesting. My wingate ver 5.2.3 stopped suddenly. A restart takes all day long. Today I noticed that the CPU usage jumps to 100% from 35-40% whenever I stop and restart wingate manually - I actually it has not fully started.

Any savior ?

I solved this only by reinstalling WinGate. I saved WinGate registry keys, and then just imported them back in registry, and everything became fine...

Success but no browsing

Postby ken » Jul 26 04 5:19 pm

By deleting the history.* files wingate has finally woken up ! BUT no browsing from clents machines at all - "500 internal server error" is the meassage I get. I have checked the WWW proxy server about 10 times and all settings seem Okay - actually when wingate stopped working we had not changed anything and we have not changed ay settings even now.

Hi Ken,

If you want to send me your configuration file I'll have a look at it. My address is mattp at qbik dot com

In the meantime, a couple of questions:
Can you browse the internet from the WinGate server
How are you connecting to the internet
How are your clients connecting to the WinGate server, NAT, proxy or WGIC?
How is the DNS set up on your WinGate server?
Can you ping the server from the clients, can you ping www.yahoo.com (becuase it returns ping requests) from the server and client?

Regards,

Matt

Thanx to all who helped. After dilly dallying with www proxy settings, all clients have started to browse ,but I cant still figure out where the problem was ! I think it was in the www proxy server settings.

One more question though out of curiosity - what is the 'safe' size for the history dbf file and the cache size- I dont think mine were that big yet the server took that long sleep.

All the best guys -the forum is great !

Ken,

"Safe size" doesn't seem to be the problem. It's just a database that gets confused occasionally.

I run mine at 10mb. I've had problems a various sizes.

Just remember to delete it if things go strange.

One thing.

If you had had WinGate 6.0 installed, then gone back to 5.2.3 (like I tested on one machine today), and use Transparent Redirection, you may get this error "malformed request", if the later (version 6.0) ENS driver was not replaced by the version 5.2.3 installer.

Hi all,

From what I can see in V6 history is 'cured' and I do things to provoke a problem with my own Wingate server, namely turn it on daily!

Under 5.x about every 3rd start > no history < methinks the problem gone!

Great job!

Cheers all round.
