Problem analysis

Sep 24 04 7:33 pm

I am having trouble with a couple of applications not being able to get through to the Internet. What I was wondering is how do I find out what is happening and what may be going wrong when I run these progs. I cannot find much evidence of anything in Gatekeeper. I would like to know how to fix these problems myself, you know teach a man to fish.....

Regards,
Mark.

Diagnosis depends on how you connect out to the internet (From the client). Normally, for NAT you should not need to configure anything. WGIC might require a bit more attention, while a proxy connection will mean you'll need to setup mappings, etc. to get it to work.

Which one are you using?

Yes I am using NAT. I have a program that is trying to communicate via the internet and it is not working. I am running it on the Wingate server machine at the moment and I cannot see any evidence of anything happening at all. How do I find out what this program is trying to do.

basically the last word in network troubleshooting is a network packet sniffer.

something to see at the lowest level exactly what is being sent on a packet level by your application.

that plus a basic knowledge of TCP UDP and IP routing is basically as good as you can get for tracking down issues.

we normally use a product called Commview for this. Our own product NetPatrol will also capture packets, but not being designed as a protocol analyser, doesn't have the filtering a search capabilities in its packet capture viewer that Commview and other packet sniffers have. Not yet anyway.
