Wingate and Msn

I have a problem using my webcam on MSN messenger. I'm running the latest versions of both Wingate (6.0.4 - Build 1025) and MSN (7.0). The webcam was working fine like 3 days ago but then it stopped working yesterday.

Please help.

I just downloaded the MSN 7 on my PC and initiated a WebCam session with a friend; all worked fine via NAT. Hence I have a couple of questions for you.

1a) Does the webcam work when you go to --> MSN Messanger 7 --> Tools --> WebCam settings
1b) Does your Web cam work if you bypass WinGate.

2a) How do you connect to WinGate. NAT / Proxy / WinGate Internet Client?
2b) Do you have any proxy settings placed in --> MSN Messanger 7 --> Tools --> Options --> Connection

I'm using WGIC/proxy, cos i wasn't too sure about how to use NAT. I'll try that first to se if that helps. Also how do I bypass wingate to connect to the internet on my client PCs (they are the ones with the webcams).

Yeah .... the camera does work in the tools --- webcam settings menu ... at least i could see it on there.

Hi JonJ,

There are a few possiblilties to bypass WinGate.

1. Make the clients Default Gateways and DNS the same address as the router.

2. Run the WebCam from the WinGate machine (kind of / the easiest way)

3. Use a seperate internet connection for one of the client PCs, e.g. install modem

4. Take your web cam some where else and install MSN 7.0 there.



Now regarding your NAT question / Statement.

To set you up with NAT, we must know a few things.

1. Is the Extended Networking Driver installed? (Which allows you to use NAT / Firewalls etc..) ENS, as it is known, will be in the GateKeeper on the left hand side in a list. The list can sometimes be hidden if the "Control" button up the top is on the wrong toggle.

2. What is the internal address of the WinGate Server (IP Address)

3. What is the IP address of one of the clients (a computer that needs to contact the wingate server to share the internet connection.)

4. Are the addresses obtained automatically, or are statically set?

To find out your IP address on a Windows 2000 / XP machine. --> Start Menu --> Run --> cmd --> ipconfig /all

To find out your IP address on a Windows 95 / 98 machine. --> Start Menu --> Run --> winipcfg --> Select the correct internal adapter from the list.

Thanks James. Sorry it took a while to reply. The webcam works on both the server and the client running NAT (Client1). So I changed the other client's (Client 2) connection method to NAT but for some weird reason, the webcam still doesn't work on client 2. Don't know what else to do now. I think it might be client 2's PC .... not too sure what the problem might be tho'. I have this feeling that the PC's still trying to dial using the old DNS ... probably I'll purge the DNS or something, dunno.

Client 2, hmmm.

Presumptions:
Obviously has NAT as well. Same Gateway and DNS as Client 1
Obviously can connect to internet via Internet Explorer etc.
Obviously can Use most of MSN Messanger except WeCam and I presume some other stuff.
Obviously has the Driver loaded for the cam

1. Have you got some other Firewalls running on that?
2. hmmm

Thanks for your help man. I finally got the damn thing working about a week ago, but all of a sudden, it stopped working again yeasterday. The webcam works/worked fine but when signing in to MSN, the connection just instantly times out and it just keeps on doing that, over and over again, you click the sign in button then after about 2 seconds, the button changes back to sign in .... I'm really getting tired of this, either my computers are messed up or .... i dunno ..... the server works though. I also ran the connection test thing in MSN and it told be there were 2 problems found, both to do with domain authority??

PS Yes I do use a firewall program .... Zonealarm. Thanks.

It is hard to know when stuff sometimes works, then does not... And trying to find information on MS site regarding "MSN Messanger 7 Domain Authority error" seemed like a lost cause.

Out of my experience, Zonealarm has given me grief before. I suggest you stop it from loading when your computer boots up (Not right click and disable, but stopped from loading with the OS). And retest. If it works fine, then reenable ZoneAlarm and map the appropriate ports.
