smtp server not responding

Sep 01 05 10:32 am

hi, I have a problem which isn't a wingate problem, I guess. I have wingate server running on a pc with W98SE: it works OK; some days ago the SMTP server request from one of the client-pc's (mine of course) could not be connected; today my second desktop got the same problem; my secretaries pc with W98SE and outlook express and IE6.0 works all day without any problem; both my desktops run with WXP(SP2) and I prefer to use Mozilla Firefox(works OK and having no problem) and Thunderbird(mail receiving without any problem) (but an outlook session for sending didnot work either); some 10 days ago I (re?-)installed mcafee virusscan because it was the product I sold some time ago and it was not (yet?) installed on these two XP machines; today I removed the mcafee software, rebooted the machine and tried to resend email, but I was not lucky.
Can you give me a hint were to find the erroneous setting in these XP-machines?

Hi,

Where are you seeing the failure messages? Are you getting an error in the mail client?

How are you sending mail, do you connect to an ISP to send or does WinGate send your mail from the SMTP server?

If WinGate is sending mail for you then you should turn on debug logging in the SMTP server and you should see the problem.

Hi Matt,
On your questions:
Where are you seeing the failure messages? Are you getting an error in the mail client?

I receive on my mail-client (in Thunderbird and in Outlook) no message at all after the request to connect to the mailserver of the ISP; I have a network TCP/IP analysing programm and from that I do know the following:
I will use the ip-addresses
192.168.0.4 sends a request to 198.162.0.1 ( this my WINGATE-server) for connection
response : OK
request from 192.168.0.4 for DSN of the ISP-mailserver with the name mail.planet.nl
response: the ip-address of mailserver
request from 192.168.0.4 to 192.168.0.1. to make connection to the found ip-address
response NOTHING

How are you sending mail, do you connect to an ISP to send or does WinGate send your mail from the SMTP server?

As from above you can see I send my mail via an ISP , I have no email server (yet) in Wingate (is that possible and if so how?)

If WinGate is sending mail for you then you should turn on debug logging in the SMTP server and you should see the problem.

Logging in Wingate is ON for almost everything(except license violation): this is SMTP log from august 31:
08/31/05 21:43:13 Service started successfully
08/31/05 21:43:13 Debug: Build DomainList took 47 milliseconds
08/31/05 22:39:38 Configuration changed
08/31/05 22:41:05 Configuration changed

I am pretty sure it isn't a wingate problem but you people are almost the only ones who can advise from an expert-point-of-view

1. Can you check your account settings for Outlook? Tools menu --> Email Accounts (Outlook 2002). I am just speculating that McAffee may have change your settings in there.
2. How long have you had Service Pack 2 installed on XP?
3. Do you know how you connect to the WinGate server? Proxy / NAT / WinGate Internet Client (WGIC) ?

1. as far as I can see the wingate client uses DNS to make connections with/via Wingate server for SMTP (and browsers)
2. SP2 is already in for some months
3. I have a network analysing program running and it produces a nice report in an html page or into 10 excel-sheets; how can I send 1 of these files to you?

the strange thing is: the settings of outlook and thunderbird are not changed by mcafee as far as I can see and from my secretaries desktop an email with outlook-express goes thru to the ISP server and arrives good in my inbox of thunderbird

sales at wingate.com and reference this forum post.

Regarding my question:
Do you know how you connect to the WinGate server? Proxy / NAT / WinGate Internet Client (WGIC)

1. To find out if you have a NAT connection from the Windows 98 machine.
(Windows ) Start menu --> run --> command --> ping www.google.com
If you get replies back, you have a NAT connection method (Please note this is just a simple test, there are other ways to check).

2. To find out if you have WinGate Internet Client. Check to see if you have this folder in your start menu.
(Windows) Start menu --> Programs --> WinGate Internet Client

3. To find out if you have a Proxy set up. Open up your web browser and see if there is a proxy set in it. An example of Internet Explorers proxy location is below.
