DNS server address

Aug 12 10 8:42 pm

Why is it that I need to manually enter the IP address and DNS server address when using a cross over cable? Out of curiosity, I was wondering why the IP address and DNS server address can't be obtained automatically when using a cross over cable to connect two PCs (or even a PC and an xbox)?

Automatic IP/DNS/Gateway configuration is provided by a DHCP server on the network. WinGate includes its own DHCP service that can do this for you. Simply set the IP configuration of the network adapter on the WinGate side of the crossover cable, and WinGate will be able to serve and IP address to the client side automatically through DHCP.

Note that if you have any third party firewalls enabled on the server, they will almost certainly block the DHCP ports. Open the ports manually, or disable the third party firewall.
