Force Proxy Authentication - Wingate 7.3

Apr 10 13 4:31 pm

Hey,

I've just setup Wingate 7.3 and configured the WWW Proxy Server with my upstream proxy for work. Everything works but I just want to force authentication, can't figure it out. I also mucked around with the Web Access Control Rules but I either locked myself out of the proxy completely or it works with/without authentications details.

Am I in the right place in the settings?

Cheers

Hi

the normal place to force auth to the web proxy is in Web Access Control rules. What you need is a rule where

a) everything matches what / where / when
b) for who, the user can't be anybody, e.g. must be some known person/group

in this case, it will force authentication. So for normal usage, where you want to restrict users/groups to categories/sites, it should auth as long as the what/where/when matches (otherwise the rule wouldn't apply anyway).

Also make sure that the auth methods are not disabled in the WWW proxy.

The next version of WinGate (currently called 7.5 but maybe will be released as 8.0) has an explicit auth result, e.g. currently you have allow or deny, we added auth (which will cause a re-auth if the user is already authed).

Regards

Adrien

Thank you very much.

Created new rule with the settings you specified and moved it down to second last. Only have Banned/Force Auth (one I created)/Default enabled. It's now behaving the way I want.
