DIRECWAY & WINGATE - SECURE PAGES?

Aug 21 04 3:43 am

I HAVE SETUP WINGATE ON MY XP WORKSTATION TO SHARE MY DIRECWAY CONNECTION WITH THE REST OF THE NETWORK.

I TRIED SETTING IT UP THROUGH A CASCADED PROXY. THAT WORKS OK (REALLY SLOW) FOR MOST PAGES. HOWEVER, FTP AND SECURE PAGES DO NOT LOAD.

THE LOCAL WORKSTATION GETS A DIRECT CONNECTION THROUGH DIRECWAY WITH 127.0.0.1:83 IN ITS LAN SETTINGS IF THAT HELPS... ALSO I GET A LITTLE CONFUSED WITH THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BINDINGS AND CONNECTIONS.. JUST A LACK OF UNDERSTANDING OF HOW THEY DIFFER..

Hi,

Direcway does not handle secure pages through it's proxy? In order to setup for direcway do the following:

Modify the WWW Proxy as follows:
1) Open Gatekeeper,
2) click on the services tab (left bottom of screen)
3) double click on the WWW Proxy
4) Click the connection tab/icon (tab if in wingate 5.x, icon on left if in wingate 6.0x)
6) click through cascaded proxy
7) enter server IP 127.0.0.1
8) enter port 83
10) UNCHECK bypass proxy for local sites (very important as wingate will not use the direcway DAK software for all sites)
11) click OK to save and close the WWW Proxy config window.

Note: This above assumes you have the direcway DW 4000 modem and you are running the DW software (a little blue square with the letters DW will be in your system tray). If you have the DW6000 then you must point the above server IP to the appropriate IP Address (I don't have the 6000 but I would assume the DW6000 has it's own IP Address).

In order to receive and send HTTPS traffic you need to bypass the DW software as it doesn't handle SSL. To do this add a new WWW Proxy to the wingate services as follows:
1) Open Gatekeeper,
2) Click on the services tab
3) Right click in the white space below the list of services and from the menu choose new services --> WWW Proxy Service
4) Change the name of this service to "Secure WWW Proxy Service"
5) Change the description of this service to "Secure WWW Proxy Service" or whatever you want to identify it for you.
6) Change the port to 81
7) Don't change anything else, on the connection page the radio button for directly connecting to the internet should be chosen. (this is the default).
8) Click OK to save and close the window.

Note: Assumes DW 4000. If you have the DW 6000 you man need to setup the connection page to point to the IP Address of the modem and Port 80 (not 83, port 80 should allow traffic to go through the modem bypassing the DW proxy software running on the modem)

Finally you will need to setup your client browsers as follows:
1) Right click on the Internet Explorer icon and choose properties.
2) Click the connections tab
3) Click the LAN Settings Button
4) Check the use a proxy server for you LAN box
5) Click the Advanced button
6) In the Proxy Address to Use box, Enter the IP Address of your server machine for HTTP, SECURE, FTP and SOCKS. Leave Gopher blank
7) In the port box for each service do the following HTTP: 80, Secure: 81, FTP: 81, Socks: 1080

All workstations must be setup this way.

Note: I have the DW 4000 so I know that the above works for it. I made some assumptions about the DW 6000 that may or may not be correct. Also the client config assumes you are not using the wingate client software but just connecting directly to the wingate server via the browser settings.

This is the way I have my network setup and it works well for me. I must say that the secure access is slower since you are not going through the direcway DAK software but this is Direcway's problem and no way to fix it. Your standard HTTP browsing should be as fast as using the browser on the your server machine.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
