disabled WGIC destroys regular connectivity

Postby redheat » Sep 07 05 7:14 am

When I install WinGate internet client and leave it DISABLED/UNUSED most of my network applications can no longer connect to the internet - things that worked before!! It seems to break my networking for some reason. Strangely, my browser and e-mail clients keep working even when it is installed. When I uninstall WGIC everything is fine again.
This happens under Win XP Sp2. I have Sygate Personal Firewall installed but disabled when this happens.

Any idea what this could be??

1. How were you connected before? Directly with a modem?
2. Whats some example applications that loose connectivity?

3. Do you have a proxy specified in internet explorer?
4. Do you also use a NAT connection method?

5. Do you have the Windows Firewall on?

I have Sygate Personal Firewall installed but disabled when this happens.

6. Sometimes disabling a firewall is not enough. Can you try to uninstall it?

7. Is there any specific reason why you need to use the WGIC? What is your desired result?

The client can access the internet through a very restrictive NAT router. The router basically allows only port 80 in and out. There is now a machine available which is directly connected to the internet. It becomes the WinGate server. With its help, I would like to give to a few selected clients full internet access again by using the WGIC on them.

Applications that don't work with WGIC but work when I allow everything in and out on the restrictive router are, e.g., SIP VOIP clients such as www.voipbuster.com.

I don't use a proxy in the browser. Also Windows Firewall is not in use. I'll try to uninstall the Sygate Firewall and post again.

That would be good; let us know how the Sygate uninstall goes.

If you are going to make VOIP connections, you will want to try with NAT. The WGIC can work along side NAT; just set the application that requires NAT to "Local Access" in the WGIC, and obviously have the NAT connection method set up on server and client. If you are not familiar with NAT via WinGate, please ask.
