Before buying, can Wingate do the following?

Postby daham » Dec 12 04 1:02 pm

Hi….

I am looking for a software that could make Internet sharing among my network easier plus caching, firewall and antivirus, I found that Wingate have all of these.

But, what is more important for me is controlling internet access, here is what I want:
I would like to grant access to some users based on certain amount of time per day, for example user1, user2 and user3 are allowed to access the internet for 2 hours per day any time between 9am – 5pm mon-fri and 5 hours per day any time sat and sun.

If this function is not included with Wingate, is there a plug-in that could be installed?

I know that this kind function is possible because I read in the internet that MS ISA 2000 and Proxy-Pro Gatekeeper can do that.

Thank you.

p.s. I have downloaded Wingate 5.01 trail but could not find anything regarding that on the help file.

I've never used this function, but I have seen the options. You can set up different user accounts in WinGate, and then control their access via the policies page on the WWW proxy. Among many other settings, you can control the time of day that they have access.

Yes, that should be possible, but it does require a rather complex policy setup. You would (a) have to restrict the times users are allowed to access the Internet and (b) have to restrict the amount of time that a user is allowed to access the internet.

However, I would recommend that you forget the 5.0.1 trial and download the 6.0.3 trial. It has numerous bug-fixes and will make support (And your user experience) significantly easier and better.

Using the trial version is the best option - to see that WinGate will do what you want it to do before buying.

Thanx bradley13, Pascal

I know it has been a while since my post, but now I am ready to try your software before buying it.

Does your software have the feature I have requested?
Couold you please be more spacific in replying or may be direct me to the link spacifying this in your support site, coz I have checked your support site but could not find anything about restricted access time for users.

Thanx again.

Install WinGate 6.1; by default the firewall will be installed; it will not be installed if you deselect the ENS option.

Here is a theoretical way to do it; I cant say I tested it.

After creating those three users, create and put them in a group called "UserX"... Then you would need to schedule a new event; Reset All User Accounts.

GateKeeper --> Sheduler --> WinGate Internal Maintenance --> Add Event button --> Select "Reset all user accounts" --> OK --> Do Now button --> OK

Now, this next part can depend on conenction methods and so forth. If you were only allowing them to use the proxy, you could create the policy in the WWW Proxy Service. If your users will be playin games etc, then you may want to add it to the system policies and set up User1/2/3 with the "assumed users" authentication method (GateKeeper --> Users tab --> Assumed Users ... Assume by IP Address if you are not using WinGates DHCP service).

If in doubt, give the forum some more feedback

The policy would be like this.

GateKeeper --> Services tab (bottom left) --> WWW Proxy Service --> Policies

Important step --> Default Rights Are Ignored (Drop down list)

Add --> Select the "UserX" group and your authentication method
Click the Time tab --> Icluded times --> Add 9am - 5pm Mon Fri,
Click the Advanced tab
Add Filter --> Add Criterion --> This Criterion is met if User:Seconds Online is Less then 7200 ( 60secs x 60mins x 2hrs)

Ok etc back to the Policies tab of the WWW Service, then add UserX Group in a second time.
Add --> Select the "UserX" group and your authentication method
Click the Time tab --> Icluded times --> Add Anytime Sat / Sun,
Click the Advanced tab
Add Filter --> Add Criterion --> This Criterion is met if User:Seconds Online is Less then 18000 ( 60 x 60 x 5)
