How to config 98se to share IC w/ Linux PC using Wingate

Postby kp247420 » Aug 19 06 2:58 pm

Well I got Wingate trial on my 98se PC, this connects to the internet w/ a Wireless NIC (Zonet 1601) through a WireSpeed modem/router in a local coffe shop configured to use a open network(No WEP, WPA). This 98se PC also has a Ehernet card that connects to a My Linux PC(Vector Linux) through it's ethernet card. I have both PC's to use DHCP... I think..but anyways when I try to open a web browser or enable the network connection on my client(Linux PC) I get a ststem message on my Host(98se PC) in the Wingate System Messages window that says: "Client vector.linux.vnet denied access - nonprivate address allocation denied".
Well I guess this might mean the PC 's are sort of talking to each other...progress I hope. I am very much a newbie maybe even a dummie sometimes and was wondering if there was a VERY EASY guide to help me get this working,or maybe if there was a quick fix for this. So far all I did was set up both ends for DHCP and put in some IP's and Subnets and some how my 98se box is sort of recoginzing when I try to enable the internet connection on the Linux box, but keeps denying access...stil a big step for me though.

Thank You all so much for taking the time to read my post

By the sound of this scenario, you can either click a check box in Gatekeeper --> DHCP to allow non private address allocation, or change the ip address on the network card pointing towards the linux box; it should be a private ip address unless you have been officially allocated a public one. Below is an example private ip address and a typical ip address scheme that will be passed onto the linux box via DHCP.

Default Gateway to internet via Wi-Fi
<WinGate Computer>
IP Address/Subnet Mask 192.168.10.1 / 255.255.255.0

IP Address/Subnet Mask 192.168.10.2 / 255.255.255.0
DNS/Gateway 192.168.10.1/192.168.10.1
<Linux>

DNS turns domain names into ip addresses.
The Gateway is used for finding ip addresses that are not on your local network.

Can't find "Allow non-private address allocation check

Postby kp247420 » Aug 20 06 5:00 am

I looked in the DHCP services section of Wingate. I'm not sure how to reassign IP addresses either, I mean I sort of have an idea, but if I mess up my Internet Connection on my 98se box then I won't be able to turn to you for help on the forum, then after that......well I don't even want to think about that. But anyways if there is any other info(specs., routing tables, ect.) that might help you help me, I will post it. Maybe some day I will do some reading to try and understand all this networking stuff, but right now I'm trying to learn LINUX.......and you know how that is for an individual like me. Well I just want to thank you soooooo much for trying to help me. Thanks again.

OK I found the "Enable Nonprivate adress allocation box

But It did not seem to work. So now I'm doing some more research to try and find how to change around my IP's and subnet's. But would this still be considered "DHCP" if I start configuring stuff manually. At this point you might be falling over laughing at my Computer Literacy, but I will do my best to stick with ya if it starts to get technical. Thank you very much for reading my posts.

Can you check the adapter usage in WinGate?

The wireless network card pointing towards the internet will be marked as external (firewall default action deny from Wi-Fi side of network), and the other network card pointing towards the linux box will be marked as internal (firewall default action allow for linux box side of network).

GateKeeper --> View menu --> Network --> Network Connections (Bottom centre)

Most people have a challenge on their hands when networking for the first time. The main thing is not messing with the connections on the side of the Wi-Fi network; modifying the connections on the linux side of the network shouldn't break the internet connectivity for the WinGate computer. If you need to post some ip address and wingate details, you can do the following.

Gatekeeper --> Options menu --> Advanced --> uncheck license details/key , then save report.

dos prompt --> ipconfig/all >> c:\ipa.txt
