We have a typical WinGate server installation and about a dozen client machines. We have Internet Explorer's proxy settings set on all client PC's so that all client browsers can access the WAN. Works very well.
Works well, until we surf to a website that launches a Java applet that needs to connect to the hosts's server (the applet is a chat window). The japa applet tries to connect to it's server, but it times out and reports that it cannot connect.
I looked at the Windows Control Panel and found the Java control panel, and it's "Network Settings" tab shows that Java is configured to use Internet Explorer's proxy settings. There is another setting that allows you to enter your proxy settings. I did, and no go.
I installed the WinGate Client on the client machine, and while I can see it working for other types of connections (Remote Desktop for example), it just doesn't seem to work with the Java applet, no matter what I have Java's proxy settings set to.
Does anybody reading this have any experience with Java applets and WinGate?

Hi Mark,
Can you tell the forum the website where the Java applet is giving trouble?
I use several of these and are all ok.
Do you use NAT on your network, if you make a direct connection does it run then?

The site is www dot astrocollege dot com. They have a classroom Java applet that runs fine if we connect directly to the modem - as soon as I try to connect through WinGate the applet will no longer connect to it's host server. I have completely disabled WinGate's firewall and it still refuses to connect. Any thoughts?

Well, we got it working. I had to create a new TCP Mapping Service in Gatekeeper. I set the Default Mapping to www dot astrocollege dot com, and port set to 8080. Worked immediately.
