Are you trying to:

-block certain IP's on your network from accessing the net?
-only allow access from you network to certain external IP's?

I am interested in whitelisting to allow just a few url's in and out of a single machine with wingate running on it. Is that doable? Hardware firewalls can do that, I have one in fact, but I want a software solution as well, so far I find very few and they all apply to browsing only, I'm not talking browsing, I'm talking access to the entire machine. Maybe that can't be done with just one machine... I could set up a linux machine to do that for sure but I'm looking for the simpler solution...

From your description, it sounds like you want to use WinGate as a personal security suite to control internet access of the computer it's installed on. This is not what WinGate was designed for. WinGate is a server/client based internet gateway suite designed to serve and control internet access to client computers. If you install WinGate on a dedicated computer in front of your client computer, you will be able to obtain the level of control you require.

How hard would it be to make some software that whitelisted a single machine by urls? I've been looking for that for a heck of a long time. Recently I learned that whitelisting is a new topic in the security business, that explains why I have not found software to do what I want it to.. for my purposes typing in a few urls would be a fine way to administer the software... I don't want to mess with the networking and two machines to protect just one machine......

Not very hard at all I imagine, but that's not what WinGate was designed to do :). WinGate has the ability to create URL whitelists to restrict client internet access and much much more, however it can only manipulate the internet access of Internet connections that traverse the WinGate engine (i.e. clients connecting through the WinGate computer). Because connections to the internet that originate from the WinGate computer itself do not traverse the WinGate engine, you do not get the same control over the computer that WinGate is installed on as you do over client computer that connect to the Internet through the WinGate computer.

So if you require this control over computers in your network, I highly suggest installing WinGate on a dedicated server and placing it between the client computers and the internet like a hardware router. This is how WinGate was designed to be used and will provide the best results.
