Don't know how common this is but I experienced problems with the Java login authentication window on one client computer running XP SP3 and IE 7. This was a clean install of XP on a computer that is memory limited at 256KB. At first all seemed good with the bringing up of the Java login window but after a couple days, the window would not finish opening and no login information was displayed, only 'about: blank' appeared in the status bar. The half open Java window really had the system locked, and I even had difficulty shooting it with Task Manager.
I suspected Sun Java to be at the root of the problem. After an extensive search, I found a link to download MS Java VM even though it is officially no longer available. After installation, MS Java immediately solved the problem. The Java login window pops up instantly on starting an IE session, much better performance that I've seen from Sun Java at its best.
Ironically, my XP installation disk originally contained MS Java, until I sidestreamed SP3 onto it. Just posting this in case it helps someone.
