Message deletion - Leave messages on server for x days

Jan 23 12 4:14 pm

Hi,

Considering WinGate to replace my existing email server, but there is one feature that I use often, that WinGate does not seem to have. In your manual http://help.qbik.com/index.php?topic_id=124, 3 options are shown, Leave all, delete if deliverable, and delete all.

My current software has the ability to leave the meassage on the server for x days, after which they are deleted (pop3 collection from ISP). I frequently use this when travelling on business, as it allows me to check email using webmail using the smartphone, laptop or whatever. I do not intend to push messages to the phone.

If this isn't available, is there any other way to get to my mail when out of the office? Or am I missing something?

Regards,
Martin

Hi

We can look at adding function to remove messages from the server after a certain period of time.

But if your question is really what other ways are there to remotely access mail, you could look at hosting a webmail server.

In fact our webmail server uses WinGate itself as the web server.

There are a number of PHP-based free webmail systems that are pretty good:

* Squirrelmail. Works pretty well, quite quick
* roundcubemail. Later versions work quite well. Nice interface. Uses a DB to replicate mailbox indexes, so you need a MySQL server somewhere.
* Afterlogic webmail lite. Quite nice, similar to roundcubemail in that it needs a DB.

Thanks Adrien.

It would be good if you could look at adding that function.

I've considered a webmail server, but decided it's not worth the hassle and would just take time from my business. Rather leave that side of it to someone who knows what they are doing and has all the gear to protect the server - and might actually look at that option. Use OpenHost to do my hosting and their webmail is quite good. Not that I like webmail - Outlook with all it's faults has grown to be pretty good and it would take a lot to move me away from it. My pst files are quite big and emails have loads of attachments, and having that sort of thing remote can be trying at times, extremely useful other times. Horses for courses I suppose.

I only have 4 PCs to receive mail an was looking to move to an IMAP solution rather than straight POP3 that I currently use. it would be POP3 collection from OpenHost to WinGate, then IMAP locally to the PCs.

Hi Martin

It's something we can look at adding, but there are some potential migration issues etc that will come into play, since we store UUIDs we have seen in the registry, and would need to additionally store a time to delete the message. That means changing the registry format, which creates a migration issue for existing customers who have existing entries. So it's not as trivial as you might expect.

I wonder if there is a workaround.

Presumably mail is left on the server to allow other clients to look at it from there.

What if those other clients just looked at it in WinGate's IMAP server instead? Then it could just be retrieved from the server and deleted.
