p2p on wingate

hi
i have installed the evaluation version of the latest wingate since 3 days..
i have configured both the computers so that the client also can access the net thru the server computer
but the PROBLEM is that i cannot get p2p applications aswell as flashget and other downloading applications to work nor can my msn messenger can connect on the client computer
im thinking of purchasing wingate but this little inconvenience is proving to be a major hiccup

BTW i forgot to mention this is the first time i have networked anything so i dont really have any background info on anything related to networking

Hi there

Is the P2p software being hosted on your LAN, or is it that your users are connecting to P2P servers on the Internet?

If machines on your LAN are hosting P2P software and so are being connected to from the Internet, then you will have to open the approriate ports on the WinGate firewall to allow this traffic into your network to get to these machines.

This can be done on the Port Security tab in the ENS configuration found in GateKeeper. In this configuration you will have to select the "redirect packet" option and provide the internal IP address of the machine on your Lan hosting the software. This way WinGate will know where to send this traffic when it comes in from the Internet.

I might suggest you take a read of the overview of the ENS port security tab to see how this is configured on our knowledgebase which you can find here:

If the P2P software is being initiated by users behind WinGate on the LAN then WinGate will automatically open the approriate ports when requested by the Application/user (just like someoone trying to surf the Internet with a browser or use ftp) and will accept and return the (answering) data from the remote Internet location to the appropriate user on the LAN.
