VPN Quits working on 6.0.1

Postby mmakowski57 » Aug 19 04 12:46 am

Hello.

I just upgraded from 6.0.0 to 6.0.1 and it is no longer possible to set "Local Network" on the Wingate Server side of my VPN. I change the drop down box in my VPN settings to Local Network and click OK. Subsequently, the next time I go back to the VPN tab the system has changed the setting back to Local Computer.

Reinstall of 6.0.1 did not help.

When I reinstalled 6.0.0 the proper behaviour returned.

What combination of licenses do you have ? (I.e. WinGate Enterprise / WinGate Pro / WinGate Standard / VPN add on / VPN only, etc.)

The 6.0.0 Wingate server has a 50-user Wingate 5.x license and a version 1 single user 5.x VPN license. The licensing screens says the Wingate VPN license has reduced functionality.

I could have sworn that the License manager originally said that my VPN license had been updated to version 6 since it was purchased recently. The licensing screen is no longer reflecting that on the Wingate server.

The remote client machine is running Wingate VPN only and its license manager indicates that single-user license has been upgraded to a version 6 license since it was purchased after April 2004.

A single user license does not allow for "Local Network" access. You need a multi-user license for that.

I'm confused.

First, it works in 6.0.0. Is something new in 6.0.1 regarding this.

Secondly, I only have one remote VPN user trying to connect to a Server on my LAN through the Wingate computer. Why would I need a multi-user license?

Thirdly. I can't even find on the QBIK website where it says this restriction exists on the single-user license.

This whole licensing thing continues to frustrate me.

Hi Mike

VPN licensing is a bit confusing at the moment with the multiple versions out there.

With WinGate, we introduced new features in WinGate 6 which are only available with a WinGate 6 license. However with WinGate VPN, there weren't really any new features that we limit in this way.

Therefore a version 1.x VPN key should provide the same functionality as a version 2.x or 6.x (or whatever it is called) VPN key. So that message about reduced functionality is probably misleading. We will remove it from our activation server code.

In the end however, a single user VPN license only ever allowed you to export local machine routes. This has been the case since WinGate 5.0 / WinGate VPN 1.0 I believe.

It is possible that when you run WinGate 6.0.0 (which build is this?) that you are picking up a VPN trial license, or a WinGate trial license that is giving you the additional functionality you are seeing. What licenses show up when you have WinGate 6.0.0 installed?

As for licensing and how it works, the fundamentals are:

1. You need a license per installation of WinGate VPN.
2. The "count" associated with each license is associated with the number of machines on the LAN connected to that machine that can use the VPN, it is not a limit on the number of VPN nodes that may connect, this in fact is unlimited, since you need a license for each one.
