nothing works

Postby netuser » Jul 09 04 10:40 am

hello, i have a router PC with 3 NICs inside. One NIC for internet access, one NIC for LAN access, one NIC for wireless LAN access. I want to share the internet connection for the LAN and wireless LAN simulatenously. The router has Windows 2000 inside. Everything worked with windows ICS (only for a single subnet - which was unacceptable for me, so i downloaded wingate). The problem is that only the computers on the wireless LAN are able to obtain addresses through the Wingate's DHCP. I can ping to the internet from the computers which got the addresses from DHCP but internet explorer does not work there. When Wingate engine is enabled, Internet Explorer stops working even on the router PC.

Extended networking plugin is installed and enabled. NAT for multiple subnets is enabled. Do I need to install Wingate to the client computers in the client mode even if i want to try just the NAT sharing for the beginning. Is it posible to generate some report file which i could attach to this post for debugging purposes ?

Hi

You don't need to install WinGate on any other machines than the router machine.

Check that the DHCP service is bound to the internal LAN card IP. On version 5.x, the DHCP service will refuse to bind to IP addresses that are not statically (i.e. manually) assigned to the adapter.

Also check that you are using different IP subnets on each adapter, i.e. don't use 192.168.0.X on each one, you would need something like 192.168.0.x, 192.168.1.X etc.

Do you, by any chance, have Realtek card in your gateway machine?

Yes, my network has the subnets numbered properly and DHCP server is bound only to internal NICs.

Yes I have three NIC with Realtek chips. Realtek RTL8029(AS) PCI Ethernet Adapter , Realtek RTL8029(AS)-based PCI Ethernet Adapter, Realtek RTL8180 Wireless LAN (Mini-)PCI NIC. Never had any problems with those two 10baseT NICs under linux (which is the OS I would still have, but I dont want to spend days getting the driver for the wireless one to work) and the wireless NIC is working fine - it can recieve the information from the DHCP.

It seems to me that some second mysterious firewall in Wingate is causing this trouble. Even when I completely disable the firewall in extended networking plugin, I still cannot browse the web on the Wingate server machine, I can only ping internet servers from there. Only when I disable the option to protect my pc even when wingate engine is stopped, and shut down the engine, it works again. I still had not any luck with getting the web browsing to work on my other LAN machines. All I can do, is to ping the internet servers from them.

There is the debug info

Aye - that's where the problem stems from. Just install the latest Beta, run WGOptions application, find the page "Hardware" and tick the checkbox "Realtek workaround". Then reboot the machine - Realtek is prone to play nasty tricks every now and again so we had to introduce this workaround trick.
