I had a post here before the delete problem asking about a problem I had on running the windows update on Win XP machines.
The situation happened only with the XP, while the w98 or w2k machine were able to update without any problems.
- First I had the suggestion to update to wingate 6.0.4, which I did but didn't solve the problem.
- Then I tried to activate the transparent proxy, which solved another problem, but not this only with the update.
- I also had the suggestion to NOT cache the microsoft.com URL. I did that but no results.
However, I was monitoring the access that the client machines were doing and noticed that the XP computers get the files from a different location.
I mean, you get in the windows update site, which is: http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/v ... fault.aspx
but once you select the updates the download comes from:
http://<something>.windowsupdate.com/<goes on>
Once I found that out I configured wingate to NOT cache the URL that contains windowsupdate.com, and that solved the problem.
Now all XP machines are able to download and install the update automatically.
I just wanted to report it to you because it issue was still open before that SOB deleted the messages in this forum, and this may help other people, however, I still don't understand why this issue happens only with the XP. At least we're able to get around it.
Best regards
