How to let a client set password when using WinGate user db?

Nov 06 15 9:04 pm

I have selected WinGate user database engine. After creating users with default passwords, how to let clients change their passwords from their computers?

Thanks.

Hi

Currently there's no easy way to do this. The Web Admin service allows setting user passwords, but only if you're an administrator (or otherwise have been granted permission to see users and groups - in which case you can set password on any account).

We're working on this for a future release. We had one attempt but it didn't work out (trying to use permissions to define concept of "self" to allow password change). We'll probably adopt a simpler approach of a checkbox on the user "user cannot change password".

Oh please allow the users to change their own passwords. I had headache when using Active Directory users on a secondary domain controller, that's why I switched to WinGate user database, which is simpler and isn't affected by Active Directory sync problems.

Hi

I got this working today.

What sync problems did you see with AD though? WinGate only caches objects retrieved from AD for a short time (couple minutes - settable) and mostly re-fetches when doing a search.

You mean you got the password change working today?

The AD sync problem is not related to WinGate. The secondary domain controller sometimes could not connect and sync to primary domain controller, and users could not access internet since WinGate could not connect to AD too. I didn't want to waste time fixing that so I switched to WinGate user db.

Hi

What sort of license do you have? I think it may be an Enterprise only feature.

Hello, Adrien!

How do you enable/use the "Web Admin Service" in order to enable users to change their own passwords?

Alain

Hi Alain. Assuming you have the version with the feature, then the Web Admin Service is added via the Control Panel::Services pane. Right click::Install Service::Web Admin Service

Hi Alain

also note it's an enterprise feature, so won't be available in Pro or Standard.

Hi Alain

which user database are you using in WinGate? this feature is only available for the WinGate users and groups connector, not AD or Windows.

Hello, Adrien.

Well, that explains it... we're using windows [users authentication]!
